During the depression Roosevelt subsidized farmers not to farm so that food prices would remain high enough to keep small farmers in business. In the 70's that was abandoned for various political reasons and Nixon put into place the current system where farmers are guaranteed a certain price for food no matter what it sells for or even if the crops all die. The result of this policy has been that farmers grow as much food as possible which then drives down food costs for consumers to a much greater dollar amount than the total spent on the farm subsidy.

Extra food is exported which hurts foreigns competitors but food exports was not the goal of the policy, cheap food for Americans is.
Interesting and good point. I didn't know about that. I have heard of subsidies with cars as Japan did in the late 80s.

Unlike other territories the home console market in Japan hasn't grown, in fact it has shrunk. There is only room for one big expensive console and the Playstation is already there, that pair of old slippers. There's no demand for another console because most of them play on handhelds anyway. That's why the Xbox fails there

Numbers are way down but xbox is still running the show in the US.
Xbox 360 tops consoles in US in April with 130,000 sold

Hardware sales continue to go down, but Microsoft is maintaining its streak of outselling the other consoles in the US

Microsoft sent word that its Xbox 360 console has sold 130,000 units in April, a month in which hardware sales were down 42 percent, marking the 28th consecutive month as the best-selling console in the US.
The Xbox 360 held 42 percent share of the current-gen console market, and total retail spend on the Xbox 360 platform in April (hardware, software and accessories) reached $208 million, the most for any console in the US.
Of course, all eyes are on Microsoft right now as the company prepares to lift the curtain on its next-gen Xbox system. The event will take place on May 21 at 10 AM Pacific time on the Redmond campus. GamesIndustry International will bring you full coverage.http://www.gamesindustry.biz/article...h-130-000-sold

Xbox 360 Sold 114,000 Units In May 2013 Making It Top Selling Console For 29 Months In A Row

Microsoft has recently announced the amount of Xbox 360 Units sold in the month of May 2013.
The amount of units that were shifted in the month of May 2013 were 114,000. This result makes it the best-selling console overall for 29 months in a row.Along with the units sold, the total retail spend for the Xbox 360 (income from hardware, software and accessories) resulted to $149.8 million, more than any other console, according to NPD data.
In comparison to May 2012, the year before, which had 270,000 units sold, it is 156,000 units down which seems like quite a drastic drop.
With the Xbox 360′s new design revealed at E3 it seems that Microsoft has so plans in the near future to ditch support for the Xbox 360 and that they plan on supporting it for at least a few more years while the next-generation of consoles kicks in. The new design could also show Microsoft’s plan on continuing to stay ahead of the PS3 in terms of sales in the upcoming months.

They're both going to need a price drop. People are holding off right now but with a nice price cut they will sell. I'll get a 2nd 360 and a new PS3 if they do.

Xbox 360 UK sales top 8.4 million: will over-take Wii in days, says Chart-Track

xbox 360 will out-sell the Wii – which is the UK’s best-selling current-gen console – in a matter of says, according to score keepers Chart-Track. It’s still 1.5 million units behind PS2 however, but is gaining ground fast.
Speaking with MCV, Chart-Track confirmed that Microsoft has sold 8.4 million Xbox 360 consoles in the UK alone, and director of Xbox and entertainment Harvey Eagle (yes that’s his actual name) added in a statement, “This is an historic milestone and our sincere thanks goes to each and every person that has bought and enjoyed Xbox 360 over the past eight years.
“As you saw at E3 earlier this month, we announced a new Xbox 360 form factor and we are committed to ensuring Xbox 360 remains the best place to play games, connect with friends and enjoy your entertainment. You’ll see great exclusive content coming not only to Xbox 360, but also to Xbox One later this year.”
The Xbox 360 is approaching the PS2′s total of 10 million consoles sold in the UK. Can the new, slimmer Xbox 360 model help it beat Sony’s record? Let us know what you think below.http://www.vg247.com/2013/06/27/xbox...s-chart-track/

Microsoft Q4 financials reveal Xbox division gains, $900M Surface loss

    http://www.joystiq.com/2013/07/18/microsoft-q4-financials-reveal-xbox-division-gains-900m-surfac/

The company took in $19.9 billion in revenue this quarter – up 10 percent compared to last year's earnings – with $4.97 billion in net income. Revenue for Microsoft's Entertainment and Devices Division, which includes Xbox 360 hardware and software sales, grew by 8 percent ($134 million) this quarter, and 6 percent ($566 million) year-on-year.

Microsoft additionally reports that Xbox Live transactional revenue grew by nearly 20 percent during the last quarter year.
    Very nice!

    June NPD:

    http://www.joystiq.com/2013/07/18/ju...a-sales-light/

Survey says....Xbox in first place again.

The NPD Group has published its monthly report outlining the performance of the physical sector of the video games retail market, with unsurprising results with respect to both the industry's overall performance and which games sold the most between June 2 and July 6. Nintendo's 3DS remained the best-selling piece of hardware for its second month in a row with "nearly 225,000" units sold according to Nintendo, while the Xbox 360 held its spot as the best-selling home console by moving 140,000 units.

The overall industry brought in $593.3 million from the sale of hardware, software and accessories (read: Skylanders toys and digital currency giftcards) at brick and mortar retail locations. This was a 15 percent year-over-year decrease from the $700.6 million the industry brought in during the same period in 2012.

The hardware sales segment and its collectively accumulated $142 million suffered the most severe year-over-year loss out of the three subsections, down by 30 percent from last year's $201.5 million.

June was also the first month of availability for the Ouya, the Kickstarter-funded Android microconsole that kicked off a growing craze for Kickstarter-funded Android microconsoles. "Retail sales for Ouya (not counting direct sales through ouya.tv) and were relatively light for a new console," an NPD analyst Liam Callahan said in a statement. "This may be due to the lack of a major marquee title driving consumers to seek out the console, low awareness due to Ouya being a new brand, or low inventory volume due to manufacturing constraints."

Not surprised. 30 straight months of domination. Here is info from xbox.com

Halfway through 2013 Xbox 360 maintains its lead in the U.S. console market. Xbox 360 sold 140,000 units, more than any other console in the U.S., making June the 30th consecutive month Xbox 360 was the best-selling console in the U.S.

    June 2013 NPD highlights:

    • Total retail spend on the Xbox 360 platform in June (hardware, software and accessories) reached $197 million, the most for any console in the U.S. (Source: NPD Group, June 2013)

    • During the month of June, Xbox 360 held seven of the top 10 console game titlesincluding: “Minecraft,” “NBA 2K13,” “Injustice: Gods Among Us,” “Deadpool,” “Call of Duty: Black Ops II,” “Grand Theft Auto IV” and “Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.” (Source: NPD Group, June 2013)

Xbox One, which will launch this fall, has already seen impressive pre-order sales as consumers have signed up to be the first to receive the new system. In fact, Xbox One pre-orders are trending ahead of Xbox 360 pre-orders during the same time period and have already sold out at most major U.S. retailers. To reserve your Xbox One system today, and for the full list of launch countries and prices, visit http://www.xbox.com for participating retailers.

Xbox 360 and Xbox One will also be at Comic-Con International in San Diego this week with a series of exciting events including “The Future of Xbox Gaming Revealed” and “The Video Game Culture of Zombies: How “Dead Rising 3” on Xbox One Kicks Off a New Generation of Mayhem” panels that will take place Saturday, July 20. We will never know. Sony doesn't release them, and they combine them with the PS2. Sony have been pretty quiet about their numbers. I suppose if they ever make their way out of last place, they might start sharing figures again.

Yeah.. they did share those numbers in the past. If Sony had passed the 360, I would figure they would make a press release bragging about it.

Considering Sony made that funny video about how to share games on your PS4, it's obvious they aren't shy about taking shots at Microsoft. The fact they haven't taken shots at Microsoft over passing the 360 leads me to believe it just hasn't happened. Why else would they not announce a change of positions in the console race if it favored them?

it's possible that they might still be close but they don't want to say anything until it's clearly a trend. it would be embarrassing to announce something and have it change the next month.

    i don't think they're that far apart.
