gamesradarAfter Sony's somewhat obscure comments at their E3 conference regarding their forthcoming Cell processor - which will be used to power PlayStation 3 - Sony chairman Nonuyuki Idei has revealed more of their plans for the chip. And he's confirmed that their first consumer application for it is going to be PS3, which now looks set to appear in March 2006.
"We'll first focus on developing a successor console to the PlayStation 2," he says. "But incorporating the Cell chip into TVs will give us greater control in adding functions, so we'll concurrently pursue the development of a new game console and the incorporation of the chip into TVs. It just means that demand for TVs with computer-like functions is starting to emerge and we are going to meet such demand."
So what "computer-like functions" will those be, then? We'd imagine that we'll see Sony's next-gen TVs have built-in PSX-like capabilities that will enable them to play games, connect to the net, and store and play MP3s, movies and music. In addition, don't be surprised if the PSP's wi-fi function will enable you use it as a remote control for your Sony home entertainment set-up.
Trial production of the Cell processor itself has already started and the first prototype of a Cell-based workstation is due to be ready by the end of the year. With Sony having announced that they plan to start shifting Cell-based products in March 2006, and with PS3 being Sony's priority for the chip, it appears that this could well be the planned release date for PS3.
well I will be a bit pessimistic and assume that this is for Japan, even if he was talking in English to English /Americans and so I will say if this is for Japan and is right il be pessimistic again and i will say that this means Europe will be seeing a Christmas season release date so q42006![]()
if that is right then at least we should hopefully not see any shortages of the console, in theory anyway
any thoughts on this?

im starting to try and save for it now, i just hope it wont be 2006 cause thats ages away
my friend david who is mad about consoles told me it will be out at the end of this year or at the beginning of next

2006 is the general consensous unfortunately. Sonys console wont be hitting UK shores until 1 st to 2nd Quater 06. Japan will get it a bit before then, but its looking increasingly likely that the Japanese will miss their 05' Christmas release.

Dont take my word on it, but 2006 seems to be the widely accepted date for PS3's release. Welcome to the boards.

i have a strong feeling that Sony are going to try and keep the delay of the ps3 from Japan to US and then Europe small
i think they are going to try for it being out in all territories by the end of q2 2006, but i cant be sure on that
what i can be sure is that they do want it out everywhere by the end of 2006

Any news on the possibility of being able to use PS1 & 2 games on the new PS3 console? I would hate to not be able to use the games i have already...

2006 seems most likely but your guess is as good as any. You know Colin, you could of asked me this tonight when we were at Davids..lol.

EDIT: OOps! Colin you made another post I see and I when to reply but must of been stupid and ended up clicking to edit your post. I didnt realise I had done it untill I had already hit the submit button so I had to end up deleting your post.
But to answer your question. Likely early 2006, if it was late 2006 Sony would be shooting themselves in the foot. Dont leave 2005 out as a possibility either, with the PS3 debuing at E3 05' it's somewhat logical to think that Sony could end up putting the PS3 on shelves a few months after..say sep-dec time frame.

are most of you guys english?
anyway, i think that ps3 is very likely to come out late 05-early 06 in usa/japan. Its good that they are taking their time an hopefully it will not turn into a race to realease the new console between microsoft n sony.

Releasing a console is far from a race. Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo have most likely had their release Timeframe set in stone for over a year now.
Moving up the release date at this point would have serious consequences. More than likely to meet expected ship quanities they would have to decrease the speed of the system. This would destroy most games performance and piss off 3rd parties. This would also result in less titles at launch or worse titles.
Likewise, postponing the estimated release would also piss off 3rd parties (even if they increased the system speed). It would delay the release of expected games, hurt several companies quarterly revenue numbers, it could even put a small publisher/developer out of business in a lot of cases. Needless to say this won't happen either.
The real race will be to see who can sell the consoles to the consumer better after launch. Who can hit that magical # of AAA titles required to get most casuals to consider their console. This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights. Do you mean english as in living in England or english as in the language? Anyways, I'm a Canadian! Anyways, I wish that the consoles were coming out sooner but I'm pretty patient and I want them in tip top shape for me to use! Plus I don't mind playing my GC or PS2 for a bit longer! There are still plenty of titles out there left for me to try!
"Pitiful mortal. Your hope ends here."

someone asked about backwards compatitabilty?...well yes. The PS3 will be having this option, this is just one of the few modifications being made. Sony has let out some information about the PS3. It will be having 4 control slots along with memory card slots. THe Dualshock.3 is based off the Dualshock.2 with slight modifications, one of them being a trigger behind the right handle.
And yes you all do seem to be correct, as that is what Sony is leaning towards. The release date will be ither summer of 2006 to fall 2006......and im sorry to say this, but if some reason it gets pushed back, it wont be out to the States until Janruary 2007. i know..it sucks balls....but i guess its worth the wait...well it better be, or Sony is gonna die
lol j/k

also, the changes to the console are not as dramatic as everyone thinks they are. in fact, the PS3 is being based off the PS2 design with some slight modifications and changes, sorry to break it to all you people wh owere into futuristic consoles....those kind of console wont come out until..well..the future....lol.
