I think the changes they're making right now are great because they give map makers a hell of a lot more to play with. If you get bored of Vanilla there are plenty of adventure maps out there, like Vechs Super Hostile. They're HARD as hell, but so much fun. They'll only get better with the redstone changes and new machines (hoppers, Droppers etc).
That said, I love it still. Just find it hard to find the time to play it...

Go play Tekkit for an hour and see if that still applies. I cared little for mods, much less mod packs, but Technic/Tekkit is amazing.

Yeah I definitely agree with you, Technic/Tekkit is amazing. It's also extremely easy to use since it has it's own launcher, doesn't require you to do anything but download it. There is so much to do though, and for me it brought my excitement and love back for Minecraft.
