Yeah, that's the reference beverage ... anything else probably has some compromise. Tea is actually a terrific drink, depending on the type it can have incredible levels of anti-oxidants and a number of other health benefits (of course that assumes you don't dump huge amounts of sweetener in it ...)
Just to clarify, diet sodas don't have HFCS, that's pretty much for "regular" sodas, though now there's a trend for "classic" versions of sodas using unprocessed sugar which in my mind is infinitely better vs. any HFCS sweetened product (we avoid it in everything). It's a terrible product ... check out some of the research around how your body reacts to it ... calories without any nutritional component _and_ without any "filling" effect of most caloric products (meaning you can consume a shit-ton of it ... which is of course exactly what McD's, etc., want you to do)."Remember, you're young only once but you can be immature forever."

01-07-2012 #828You make it seem like diet soda is poison that make you crave sweets. Look, I'm not saying drink diet sodas every day because they'll make you skinny, no, I'm saying if you like having a soda time to time then take a diet one instead of a regular one. Yes they contain artificial sweeteners but they won't skyrocket your blood glucose levels to kingdom come. Also, all that thing you wrote there is nitpick science at it's finest. What is concrete is that if you switch a regular can to a diet can, you'll save about 150 calories. Do that for one month and you'll have lost one and a quarter of a pound.

Artificial sweeteners are treated with chemicals to get their desired result. These chemicals are zero calories, of course. They should advertise that; "our wasp-killing spray has zero calories! Come try it!"" lol

01-07-2012 #830That's exactly what they do. Make you crave more sweets. And they continue to make you thirsty.
What I wrote is all facts. Also, all that thing you wrote there is nitpick science at it's finest.
What is concrete is that if you switch a regular can to a diet can, you'll save about 150 calories. Do that for one month and you'll have lost one and a quarter of a pound.Even though diet soda has less calories they can still lead to weight gain. This is a fact. Drinking sweet beverages cause you to crave other sweet foods. Sodas aren't healthy, whether its diet or regular. They offer no nutritional value whatsoever. The best advice you can give about them is to avoid them. Not to go from regular to diet.

With artificial sweeteners, I think it is actually possible that they have just as many calories as sugar. But a technicality in our system allows them to label it otherwise. It is a pretty bold claim to say that our powerful digestive system cannot breakdown these sweeteners.

I never drink soda anymore, except on very special occasions. All I've really drank for the past few years is water and milk.

What is my favorite snack, you ask? Milk and nuts! Preferably these dark chocolate roasted almonds:

Both almonds and dark chocolate are two of the best snacks you could have, and they also taste amazing. Definitely one of the best snack choices out there. Give them a try if you haven't yet.Last edited by Ixion; 01-08-2012 at 10:43.

Aw man, almonds I love but I've never understood how dark chocolate could taste good to someone. Same thing with coffee, neither of them find a place in my mouth

The almond goes well with the dark chocolate though. And the nuts aren't covered in chocolate. They're just roasted in it, which gives it a subtle chocolate flavor. I think you may still like it.
As for coffee, I don't like it black either. But I love coffee with some cream and natural sweetener.

Great call, a serving of almonds and 1/2 an apple is a great snack and tastes good together. You can do an awesome "power oatmeal", oatmeal + almonds (crushed up), tiny sprinkle of flax, some raisins - tons of fiber, protein, healthy fats and super filling (an important consideration).
Never heard of these ... I think I've even seen the package, and probably thought they were chocolate covered. Cool."Remember, you're young only once but you can be immature forever."

This year, I think I'm going to take on cooking. The health benefits of cooking for yourself aren't something I can ignore anymore. I have to stop using the fact that I'm not out of the house yet as an excuse.

I didn't notice Ixion's post about the chocolate almonds earlier. Definitely something I'll try out. I've been sitting here, fighting off my temptation to get some chocolate chip cookies.
If only I had some of those almonds in my house right now.

Those almonds... are delicious. About how many of those is safe to eat at one sitting? Like I said they're delicious, but I know I can have too much of a good thing.

If you mean "safe" as in "how many can I eat without putting on weight" (or something to that effect), then that depends on what the rest of your day looks like. If you have the cals to spare then eat away. Hell, you could eat the whole jar if you wanted to but you'd probably have to severely reduce the amounts of the rest of your meals.
I gave up eating nuts when cutting, my mind was blown when I started weighing my food and realised I was eating 600cals worth (about 100g) and not even getting full.

Most of my day is pretty low calorie. I pretty much drink only water at this point (am going to try to implement some kind of juice regime into my diet), breakfast consists of a bowl of Honey Bunches of Oats cereal, and lunch a small-medium sized salad with some tomatoes and dressing. Sometimes my lunch is accompanied by half of a sandwich (chicken, turkey, or roast beef). Dinner is probably where I consume most of my calories... I always get thrown into eating something unhealthy.
If I could trim my calories during dinnertime, though, I'd say my caloric intake would be pretty low. I realize that I probably need to balance my diet, though, to ensure I get a healthy variety of the nutrients I need.SchaffinOSX

Good news people, I did my weekly weigh in and I lost 5 lbs! I've been walking 30 minutes everyday and eating healthy as possible. I eat the most in the day time and the least at night after the sun sets.
I'm kinda worried I may have lost too much in a week's time.Awww! Little baby bunny! <3

I have been eating pizza a lot lately. Funny thing I find is that "pizza" is pronounced"p?ttsa." Is that French or Italian, I wonder?
