    Dell have 4k monitors in 24" and it's ridiculous, 5k at 27" is also ridiculous and the text will be just far too small. I can just about make out text on this monitor at 28", 5k on a smaller screen is an instant no no. It's the reason why I never got a Dell 24" 4k panel.

    I can't imagine. Even text at 1440p is small on my 27"

    I couldn't imagine using a monitor bigger than 30inches, at east not sat at a desk 15 inches from the screen.

    Show Us Your Rig: Minecraft creator Markus "Notch" Persson

    Welcome to Show Us Your Rig, where we feature the PC gaming industry's best and brightest as they show us the systems they use to work and play.
    Markus “Notch” Persson, creator of Minecraft, has a powerful rig with a deceptive appearance. Hidden behind its ancient keyboard and healthy layer of dust, Persson’s computer houses some serious punch. Notch was kind enough to spend some time telling us about his set-up, what he’s been playing lately, and the keyboard that has withstood the test of time.
    What's in your PC?

    • A motherboard of some kind
    • Intel i7 running at 3.4 GHz
    • Two NVidia GeForce GTX Titans, running in SLI mode
    • Two Corsair SSD Drives of 250 GB each, two slower HDs of 2 TB each
    • A BluRay drive that I never, ever use
    • One ASUS 120hz monitor
    • One Samsung monitor
    • Logitech MX518 mouse
    • IBM Model M keyboard
    • About one million USB ports

    What's the most interesting/unique part of your setup?
    Definitely my original IBM Model M from many, many years ago. It has a PS/2 connector, and weirdly my motherboard does too, so there's no need for a USB converter. The Model M is basically the best keyboard ever made, with the perfect buckling spring and amazing weight and sweet brownish white color. Definitely designed for people who type a lot, like programmers, authors, and YouTube trolls. Mine is also incredibly dirty and probably a health hazard. I almost broke it the last time I cleaned it, so now I'll just live with the finger cancer.

    What's always within arm's reach on your desk?
    Grid notepad for trying to figure out whatever problem I'm working on. Sometimes there's a pen within reach, but usually they're nowhere to be found.

    What are you playing right now?
    I haven't been playing a lot recently because programming is so much fun, but I got a HOTAS Warthog joystick and throttle for Elite: Dangerous, and I'm told the new Diablo 3 patch is pretty good, so I'll probably get into that. Again.

    What's your favorite game and why?
    Maybe Dungeon Master 2. It took an incredibly fun genre, pushed the technology of an era to its peak, and released far too late in an environment where it was incredibly outdated. The mysterious mood, the fun gameplay, and the pretty pretty graphics all made for an incredible experience. Personally, I prefer the Amiga sprites to the PC sprites, though. Or FTL.

    PC Gamer
    Seems like Notch has good tastes when it comes to building a rig. We share the same Corsair case and PSU Might even be the same Asus 120Hz screen i just stopped using as well
    Always wanted to try one of those IBM Model M keyboards. When i was researching before I bought my Ducky Mechanical board I saw a lot of people recommending those ones.

    I still have a couple of those keyboards but unfortunately the cords are messed up. I could replace them though but it would look fugly.

    How do they feel compared to a CherryMX switch? They definitely look like function over form. No place for it on my desk though. Operating on a strict black only rule. It's the main reason that has stopped me getting a Steel Series Sensai Fnatic mouse

    They feel similar to MX Blues, tactile, a little stiff, hard to double press quickly, and bloody loud! So yeah basically the same and perfect for typists. The only difference is that the actual mechanism is a spring with a board at the bottom on the Model M, they are quite squeaky too!

    Hey guys. I'm finally going to get a new monitor (for real this time) and I have my eye on this: http://pcpartpicker.com/part/benq-monitor-ew2440l

    Higher Resolution (1440x900 -> 1080x1920)
    Faster Refresh Rate (5Ms -> 4Ms)
    Larger size (17" -> 24")
    Better black and white levels (VA panels are supposedly the best around for these)
    2x HDMI (Will eventually hook my PS4 to it too)

    Do you guys have any better suggestions or know any issues with this monitor? Keep in mind my budget is only around $200ish.

    Looks like it's an improvement over your screen in every possible way so I say definitely go for it! It's a shame you don't live in the UK as I'm selling my old screen for about $150

    my friend has a BenQ screen he liked it, they also tend to use them a lot at gaming competitions so you know their of a good quality. I've only ever owned ASUS and Samsung screens so can't comment further than that but I definitely don't think it'll be a bad purchase

    I've never bought used equipment before but if you had a really good monitor going for 150$ I might be interested. What was it?

    It was an ASUS VG236H, wouldn't be worth it for you by the time you work out shipping fee's and my boss asked if he could buy it. Had it been the same country I would've done it

    Probably, and I think you guys use different electrical plugs anyway (how is it 2014 and there's no global standard yet?). I was just curious.

    Have you got the monitor yet?

    Modders do it again!

    Nothing warms my cold cynical heart like the creativity of the Doom modding community. We saw Donkey Kong Country recreated in the engine earlier this week, but now cast your eyes across this work-in-progress attempt to adapt DayZ's core gameplay into a 20-year old engine. DoomZ is the work of a modder disenchanted with the limitations of DayZ in its current, Enfusion-powered iteration. While Zdoom obviously has limitations of its own, it looks like the mod is making steady progress.
    The mod currently boasts a day and night cycle, a rather charming UI (see the image above), wildlife, fires and cooking, water, weapons, food, limb damage and much, much more. The goal is to make the game as close to the DayZ gameplay model as possible, though given the engine's limitations there won't be vehicles. Creator Robert Prest writes that the mod could move over to GZdoom, allowing for more flexibility in map design.
    As for the video below, Prest provides pretty good commentary on what the project is now and where it's headed. Alpha 11 can be downloaded right now. Cheers to Kotaku for the heads up.

    Nope. Ordered it Monday morning and it didn't ship out until 3 hours ago. Pretty crappy, but whatever. Not a big deal. I should be getting it Tuesday.

    Not long to wait especially for an upgrade. Got anything you plan to play with it first?

    Just realised anyone can download the pre-alpha of Unreal Tournament, I know what I'll be downloading when home

    Well it's a VA monitor (3000:1 natural contrast and deeper blacks) so I'll probably test a dark game like Alan Wake or Metro. That was half the reason I bought it. Then I'll test a brighter game like Crysis to get an overall feel for what the monitor can do. Then I'll play the graphically intensive Minecraft all weekend on the Yogbox Complete Pack.

    Or get a 970 as it's cooler, quieter, FAR lower TDP, cheaper, and performs the same plus you'll have it as DirectX12 ready and have other future tech ready?

    Good point. After posting I think I might wait until this time next year to upgrade my GPU.

    Depending on whatever deals. Last time I bought a 780 and only a few months later a 780Ti was released at the same price. Meh. Was thinking a Titan Black for my next card. But supposedly 6GB is overkill for 1440p and the 3GB Ti performed the same. Hmmm.

    Well with AU Optronics now being able to get IPS panels hitting 120Hz at 4K resolutions (they will be rolling them out next year) then not only will we have something better than the display that's in the OR right now but something that's going to have highly rich and accurate colours. Add in binaural audio and this thing is going to be amazing.

    Graphically it does, but game play wise I think it still looks $#@!e. The constant pausing annoys me, should be fluid like in other similar style games.
