Everyone here talking about FFX. Damn. Can't believe it's been 6-7 years since I played it. What a game.
Regarding the on topic thread. I'd certainly pick another PS2 up. But I'd have to wait until I wasn't completely broke like I am now. And I'd rather have a good PC first that could run an emulator for HD graphics.

Maybe, but to only get the best old games, I mean the PS2 did have plenty of good games. Its just that as soon as i got my PS3 i kicked my ps2 to the curb and never looked back since.

I got a load of PS2 games, currently playing SSX3 and FFXII (just got the limited edition hardback guide for it).

Would happily buy a brand new updated model for anywhere between £100-£200... yes I like it that much.

Get a used one so you can play the games again.

I still have my original fat PS2 and it still works! 11 years old now...its an amazing machine, my PS2 has been all over the place with me. I had it while I was in college and for the years following college when I moved all over the place. In fact my PS2 has moved to about 12 different homes over it's life! Never had a problem with it.

If my current one stopped working, I would definitely pick up another one. It's one of the greatest systems ever and there are tons of rpgs I never got the chance to play.

DEFINITELY would I have to get another PS2 if my current silver Slim one broke down. There are too many great games on it, and the PS2 was the last console that had reliable backwards-compatibility. The current console gen knows they have to CLAIM backwards-compatibility at launch or face the wrath of all the angry last-gen game lovers, but once the new console starts really selling they jettison BC before anything else to bring down cost/weight/etc.

At first I would have said no. But the more I think about it, that no is turning into a hell yeah. I still have all of my favorite PS1-PS2 games (all of the Suikoden games), and I would like to play Final Fantasy XI again.

On one side, yes there should have been research done on whether or not it had it (unless of course one doesn't have the internet, was misinformed, or didn't look at the back of the box but that's stretching it). It's been known for quite a while that the consoles no longer play PS2 software.
But on the flip side there are alot of first time slim buyers that are finally picking one up due to the much more affordable price. These could be PS2 owners that just made the jump or more than likely parents getting one for their kid(s) and they probably have no idea. Sony hasn't explained it was dropped to the general public except online, nothing on TV says anything about it and I'm sure the average person/parent doesn't always look up video game news online. It's usually a good idea not to say what your product "doesn't" do in any advertisement however anyone with a PS2 knows it plays original PS games so it would definitely be expected to the average Joe/Jane.

I would and have gotten myself a new PS2. The PS3 might do everything but the PS2 can still do far more than the PS3 or Xbox in a way they can or will.

The only reason I particularly would like a PS2 is because I want to play games like FFX, and FFXII. I'm sure there are some other games I'm forgetting, too. Sony is definitely doing a pretty good job getting these games to the PlayStation 3, but there are still games (like what I've mentioned above) that they have yet to provide for us.
Still baffles me why backwards compatibility was done away with in the Slim.SchaffinOSX
