Actually I was planning on going up to 64gb of RAM, but decided I can wait awhile. I'll be using it for visual effects, and post.(A lot of simulations, destruction scenes, all that.) The reason I went with the 660ti was because I had problems with the 690 running on Mountain Lion, It worked fine in Win7 but couldn't get it to work on ML. Which leads to why I have 2 SSDs. and 1TB HD/OS.

i7 3770
AMD 7970 GE
or
AMD FX-8350
AMD7970 GE
which one has more feet going forward?
i currently have a C2Q 3.0GHZ (?? too lazy bones to check proper, sorry
) but any ways, the more cores seemed to be the best way to stretch my money across soo may years back then. which one of the above will likewise last longer now?
will be getting a new PC around the time the new consoles are announced (whenever that will be)

in some ways yes it was serious

the 8350 has similar multithreading benchmarks (i think) to the i7.
which is why i ask which is better for the long run. i am planning on the i7, but if the 8350 has enough legs to justify its price then i might as well go that route and spend the money on other parts of the PC

that video keefy has put up is one of the reasons i ask.
is this something that will get adopted in future? would more cores and better multithreading performance be something we move to as next gen consoles look like they'll have many cores in their systems.
as i say, looking forward, which one would last the time as PC's evolve. the processor is the one thing i hate to change. everything else is relatively simple.
will heavily mutithreaded applications become 'THE' thing in years to come?

Negative. Windows 7 Ultimiate supports up to 192GB, and windows 8 supports up to 512GB. Windows server supports up to 4TB depending on version.
While virtual addresses are 64-bit, AMD/Intel 64-bit CPUs these days have a 36-bit or 48-bit physical addresses, not 64-bit.
The current memory limit is far below 16EB.

Sooo...EVE Online, the spaceship MMO that DUST 514 is built into, has finally prompted me into considering a PC purchase. I have my laptop but it sounds like a jet engine when I do resource intensive stuff and I want to run EVE on my TV through the AV system. I don't need a powerful system at all...All I really want is something that can power EVE on max settings without breaking a sweat.
- OS: Windows® XP Service Pack 2 / Vista / 7
- CPU: Intel Pentium® or AMD dual core @ 2 Ghz or greater which supports SSE2
- RAM: 2 GB
- HD space: 20Gb Free Space
- Network: ADSL connection or faster
- Video: ATi Radeon 5750 or NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460
- Drivers: DirectX® 9.0c (included) and latest video drivers
- DVD-ROM : 2 speed DVD reader or greater required.
Rather simple requirements...How many €€€ do you think I'll pay to ace these requirements? I'm buying this mainly for EVE and home entertainment purposes, I won't be doing much other PC gaming on it.PSU GHOST SYNDICATE - DUST 514 Media HUB - Podcast - BLOG (Soon™)

you would be better off setting a Budget of what you are willing to Spend as only having a recommended Spec PC doesn't mean you will max out said Game efficiently. you generally need a bit more for GPU power
from that Spec rayne I would upgrade the CPU to a Cheap AMD Quad core also double the RAM to 4gb & upgrade the GPU to a GTX 480 at least.

I'm considering an upgrade to my current system, but I'm not sure what exactly I can go up to to (and I mean a new build, not adding to this one)...
Currently:
AMD 6-core 1055T proc
ASUS EAH6770 DC/2DI/1GD5 Radeon HD 6770 1GB 128-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP
ASRock M3A770DE AM3 AMD 770 ATX AMD Motherboard
G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (4 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Desktop Memory
budget CD+DVD burner w/lightscribe stuff....
HDef with HDMI to my 24" Toshiba LED TV. (I never buy "monitors"...always buy a TV.)
Switching to Intel would allow me to sink major bucks into an i7 or so...but what would the gain be over going with the new Bulldozer design and an 8-core AMD proc...'It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt.' - Abraham Lincoln

Is a €500 machine going cover my EVE needs? Forgive my possibly unrealistic expectations.

i was going to say the same as john. you could build one yourself for that money ghost, but you might have to increase it a little bit to get a decent one from the shops
