I totally agree with the stuff I put in BoldI honestly think that the album The Fall of Ideals by All That Remains is an amazing metal album and is definitely worth a listen if someone likes melodic riffs and a good mix of shouting/singing.
Btw you might like this song if your into early BMTH

What particularly defines Metal music versus other rock music?
Would the video intro song of DMC3 count as metal?

I'm a little surprised nobody has mentined Ronnie James Dio yet. The man was a legend and did more for the genre than perhaps any other on this planet.
Godsmack is metal technically, but i catagorize them as hard rock. Heavy Metal is the foundation f the genre. For me, metal is both a culture and a genre of music. For music, it has grandiso sound and sometimes a wall of sound: Highly distorted and amplified guitars. Metal appricates substantive guitar work as well as sick beats on drums. the bass acts as low rumbling foundation that gives it the more robust and full sound. All the subgenres like hardcore, death metal etc. all have the same basic elements that emphasise different things. Hardcore for example uses more distortion and is more "chuggy". Thrash uses more distrtion and more synchopated beats and faster pase. Power metal generally has grandios lyrics involving mythology and use power chords. Death metal uses the death metal growl typically as vocals and more dissonence in the sound. The culture of metal aslo plays into this. Its very male driven, brutish, "fuck ya!" mentality. There is a whole field of dress and actions all associated with metal. The headbang, the horns \m/(-_-)\m/. Its really hard to understand unless your a metalhead. you just know it when you know it.Last edited by btbam; 02-29-2012 at 01:26.

Speaking of Metallica, I hadn't paid them any attention in quite some time, until a month or so ago my buddy informed me of their album with Lou Reed. So we gave it a listen...and hilarity ensued. Holy shit what a steaming pile of crap. I think Metallica may have lost any small shred of respect I still had for them. They keep finding ways to put out worse and worse music.
And speaking of Korn and music that you used to think was good, I'm kind of split on stuff like that. There are some bands that I liked back in the day (junior high, high school) that I can still pop in and at least get some sort of enjoyment out of. Stuff like Slipknot, System of a Down, Deftones, Korn (but only a few songs and just barely)... Then there's stuff I hear that I'm like "why did I listen to this?" A lot of Korn stuff fits here, as well as Godsmack, Disturbed, 36 Crazyfists, and many others.

Thing is....Nu Metal like Korn, Limp Bizkit, early Linkin Park, early Papa Roach, etc, were some of the most popular acts in the late 90s and early 2000s. Those bands were in the TRL Top 10 all the time. Now that type of music is never popular, at least here in New York. Not one person in my group of friends likes anything harder than the Foo Fighters.
So say what you will, but I'd much rather turn on the radio and hear that music than hear whatever the hell is popular these days.

I actually still listen to old Papa Roach and Linkin Park, not too much Korn/Slipknot anymore though. Do any of you guys play guitar? I find that helps me appreciate certain songs more even if they don't seem to be that popular anymore. One song that I have found this with is actually Broken Home by Papa Roach

Damnation is pure clean vocals and very boring I agree. One song I like is windowpane. It's counterpart, deliverence is balls to the walls heavy but I'm not a huge fan of that one either. Still life is their best work followed closely by blackwater park. Ghost reveries is pretty good. Ghost of perdition and baying of the hounds are great on that one. Idk if you've listened to watershed yet. I don't like the overall album. In fact I really only like lotus eater and hessian peel, but lotus eater is some of their best work.

He is a phenomenal guitarist. Very well respected from what I can gather. I know a bunch of the metal method guitar dvds are taught mostly by him with some help from other prominent metal guitarist. Glad you like it. I really need to get my hands on that album myself. I just remember this song from my friend learning it.

This is going to be somewhat of an odd entry into the thread because quite honestly, Cynic is and odd band. The best way to describe them is kind of an infusion of death metal and jazz, although the death metal elements are quite as strong as one might expect. I first heard them back in '08 with the Traced in Air and they quickly rose among my favorites despite a very short catalogue. The followed up that one with an EP called Re-Traced which was essentially a remixed version of some of the first album with a new song. At the end of last year, they released a new EP called Carbon-Based Anatomy I highly recomend this band. Its not going to offer the most traditional musical expeirence, but if you invest into their style, i think you will be highly satisfied.
Traced in Air has more prominent death metal influence but primarily is more jazzy with talkbox vocals that give it that robotic sound.
Carbon-Based Anatomy still has the the strong jazzy influence and removes the talkbox for a more natural vocal sound. It also looses most of the death metal influence but you can still hear some in the chords/ lyrical content

Two best bands/albums I've found in 2012 so far.
Artist: Eumeria
Album: Rebel Mind
Incredibly, this is their debut album. Amazing vocals, riffage, solos and unique composition. This band has big things in their future.
Artist: Borealis
Album: Fall from Grace
Great album, love the vocals. Songs flow amazingly, some of the best sections though are too short.
Anyone recommend me more like these two?

I just recently discovered a new band that I've been listening to a bit. Blotted Science.
Mind = Blown
A bit...fatiguing to listen to, but holy shit are these guys talented.
I've been listening to a bunch of instrumental stuff recently like this, Irepress, Jeff Loomis, etc.Last edited by R_Mac_1; 03-23-2012 at 21:28.

Listened to Blood Mountain by Mastodon. All three albums have been quite different so far (their latest three). I don't think this one is as good as the other two, but it's still solid and it might grow on me.
I'm now listening to Ghost Reveries by Opeth. I'm on the second song and I really like it so far.
