Well some keyboards have buttons on them that automatically shut down pc or other stuff. Most people just open the start menu and click shut down.
If it is the first one it could be a broken keyboard bad installed driver, wrong settings ind river, conflicting drivers etc. If it's the 2nd option you are using then I have no clue.READ THE RULES THAT ARE STATED IN THE LINKED TOPIC thanks for your patience

I have a feeling there could be a problem with lsass, i sometimes got this error when that crashed, usually this shuts the computer down when that crashes, but it can be aborted, but sometimes it can stop the computer from shutting down, well actually any power down command, all the ones you mentioned there.
So hit ctrl+alt+del and check if lsass is still running, if it is, then um, i really dont know what it could be, probably some virus got through and disabled itI have no signature.
No, really, i don't. You're just imagining this.

Well im not much of a computer buff but if its a laptop and theres the power button just push and hold it dow until the computer shuts off, but if it is a desktop you could always just unplug it.

If it's not responding to any of those commands, then the best course of action would be a hard reset instead of a soft one (press the reset button near the power button) and to press and hold the power button to switch it off. Just unplugging it might damage something, so I'd say the power switch and a hard reset would be safest untill you can get someone to look at it.

Yeh i know how you feel, that happened alot, or even worse, when someone switched the mouse with the mouse of the other computer and same with keyboards..grrr lol
Well i got them back, i scheduled Magnifier to run on their computer every minute hahaha, that will teach them.
When your at your computer, press the buttons ctrl+alt+del at the same time, task manager should run, if it doesnt, its a virus you have, if it does load, click the processes tab, look for lsass.exe, if its not there, then you have a serious problem with your computer and i actually wouldnt even use it to go online with things at all, even if you have a super dooper firewall, still wont help you.
If it is there however...then ive no clue whats up, i suggest doing some virus scans with as many virus scanners you can get, spybots a nice virus/bot/trojan/dialer remover, also can check some registry errors and attempt to fix, suggest backing files up as well.
If you cant find any virii, then it has to be an error in windows, and i would try do a reinstall of it, or get some really nice friend to copy some files on their drive and copy it onto a CD, bring it to yours and replace some of the files there, although this is a very risky thing to do, as you said you dont know too much about computers, so i wouldnt even risk doing thisI have no signature.

06-29-2005 #13What does that program Magnifier do? Also I have a problem also because I shut off the computer and it stays in the "shuting down you computer" screen forever so I would like this problem to be fixed. (don't say something like "just hit the power button")Well i got them back, i scheduled Magnifier to run on their computer every minute hahaha, that will teach them.

06-29-2005 #14How often do you clean your registry? How often do you defrag your computer? That could help out with a lot of things. Also I have a problem also because I shut off the computer and it stays in the "shuting down you computer" screen forever so I would like this problem to be fixed. You could download a great little free app called "TuneXp". You can set it to where the computer will shut down significantly faster than normal.
http://www.download.com/TuneXP/3000-...ml?tag=lst-0-1
Make sure you read the help files as you're changing settings. It explains in detail what each and every modication does. It definitely sped up my computer a bit. You could try it out and see how it goes.

I do defrag once a month but I'm thinking of doing it very soon. I have a program called System Mechanic 4 Pro that does alot of things just like Norton System Works that keeps the PC in tune.

My computer still won't turn off, I downloaded TuneXP and enabled faster shut downs, but it still doesn't shut down. I am did a virus scan, deleted cookies. What else should I do?

Try running Spybot S & D that seems to work well. Try booting into a live Linux to see if you can from there. Other than that I'd just back up all my important data and do a full (meaning format and re-install) system restore. I usually try to do this every 1-2 years and it defiantly speeds things up.
If you end up doing that, go and make sure you have all the install programs of your favorite software's BEFORE hand. I learned the hard way

06-29-2005 #19The changes you make with TuneXP won't take affect until you turn off your computer. So that won't work.My computer still won't turn off, I downloaded TuneXP and enabled faster shut downs, but it still doesn't shut down. I am did a virus scan, deleted cookies. What else should I do?
When my computer refuses to shut down for some reason I hit Ctrl+Alt+Delete and click on the "Users" tab and log off the current user. This will sometimes override the computer's frozen state.
Once a month is too far of a gap, IMO. I personally defrag my computer once a day. You'd be surprised how often your computer will randomly disperse files on your drive.I do defrag once a month but I'm thinking of doing it very soon.

06-29-2005 #22If the power goes out while that defrag is running it may corrupt some system files or normal files because it data goes in the RAM then back on the HDD. Once a day is way too much, are you using Diskeeper 9 or the built-in one?Once a month is too far of a gap, IMO. I personally defrag my computer once a day. Im thinking of getting a UPS when i get my PC
Had a little look on some sites for good UPSs, they are surpsingly really good and cheap as well.
And i used to use the task manager logoff as well, seems to always do better than the start menu
, then i just shutdown from there, actually it could well be your userprofile thats messed up or something.
Its possible to stop a user logging off/shutting down whatever from the security console and i think the registry as well, so that could be the problem, try make a new user and try a logoff or shutdown, if that doesnt work then i guess it probably is the system thats wrecked a bit, so a reinstall of all the files could do well.
If you have the Windows disc, stick it in and use system restore to restore all the system files, then after that try shutdowns, if it doesnt work after that, i have a feeling it could well be the machine, although thats highly unlikely.
Also for discs, Spinrites really good, refreshes the disc area and it doesnt get rid of data, also it can recover data very well, best disc program ive ever used.I have no signature.
