I just put Ubuntu on a USB drive and am playing around with it right now, even while typing this out. I can't believe I never even attempted to try out linux or whatever else add-ons there are. Completely shocked me, while I am still getting use to it because I have been using windows for so damn long, so far this it makes more sense than windows o.O
anyhow, I am definitely going to be installing this on my home computer. However, is there anything I should know about Ubuntu or any other awesome ones out there before installing Ubuntu?
Also, How do you install games on here, that is the part that kind of boggles me, is it just a basic simple install and it's done or do I need to do more?
Is there anything that this can't do that windows can do because. I mean, if I can install some of my music programs on here, I'm all freaking set, as well as installing games. WOW!

There is a reason why linux never too off for consumer/business PC's. You can't really do many of the things that you can on windows or osx. No real gaming (WINE and other similar programs are inefficient), limited compatibility with most applications ie no itunes, windows media player, zune software, microsoft office, adobe software, ect.
It's fine for basic tasks and web browsing but it can't replace windows or osx for the vast majority of people.

Aparently Quake live works under linux.
Alot of apps and games for Linux can be downloaded and installed via the software manager.Last edited by keefy; 07-07-2011 at 06:22.

I use ubuntu (11.04 I think) on a dual boot machine, my personal one. If I could play games on it I wouldnt touch windows again!
Though you can't get iTunes there are good replacements (unless you need iTunes for your phone or pad but that's why you dualboot) I can't think of the names so I could jump on and find out but I think it's called Banshee.
You don't get MS Office but you can get either Open office or the newer Libre Office ( I think it's called that, it'll be installed by default anyway) I use them for college work. It consists of an equilivant to word, excel, PowerPoint and maybe access and they are fully functional with MS Office documents.
I'd recommend getting an app called Docky. It allows you to dock your applications at the bottom or side of the screen, as like Mac's OS's
I love the way your emails are accessible from the top bar on the screen. Gwibber Is a good one if social networking is your thing as well.
Can't think of much as I've only woken up sorry

Open office isnt fully compatible with MS office stuff, I used it for some time because I didnt want to pay full price for MS office which can be expensive but I found that opening excell spreadsheets and other files that were created in MS office didnt always have the correct formatting and it took more time to fix than to re do it.
MS office for the win, I got mine for £8 last year.

can't you just get a windows emulator or something? I seen something about that when I was looking around for Ubuntu information. I'm still using my USB stick to boot it up, still toying around with it as we speak.
there is something odd that I did yesterday but can't do it today. For some reason, I copied and pasted something in the terminal that was compiz or something like that, then I clicked applications, system tools, then I clicked on a compiz fusion thing and it put a blue icon on the top bar (from there I was able to tweak 3d settings for cubed 3D windows interface, I could add affects to opening and closing my windows, etc etc)), for some reason I forgot what I had to do

thanks. Yea, I figured out a bunch of stuff so far. So basically I use windows for gaming and If I need to use office, other then that :X Ubuntu isn't all that bad so far, it was different when I first started using it a few days ago, but I am already use to it. Once I get home, I am going to install it err make a separate partition for it.
would definitely be nice if it was compatible with most of the games. lol

Linux is good its free just not as easy to use as windows which is 1 reason why its not popular, another would be less programs to do what you want to do with.
But Mac wasnt a gaming platform either until 1 developer took he leap to make it so.
Give www.quakelive.com a try it should work on linux via firefox.Last edited by keefy; 07-09-2011 at 01:50.
