FAR CRY 3 | Official Thread | Did I ever tell you the definition of insanity?

Far Cry 3, sequel to Far Cry and Far Cry 2, was announced recently at the E3 2011 conference. There is very little discussion regarding the game and, frankly, I won't stand for that. I was a big fan of the first two games and, honestly, Far Cry 3 looks absolutely amazing. I figured I'd create an official thread for the game which will be updated as any new news, images or videos are released, as well as any previews by IGN, Gamespot, etc.

    INFORMATION:

    Title: Far Cry 3
    Developer: Ubisoft Montreal/Ubisoft Shanghai
    Publisher: Ubisoft
    Platform: PS3, Xbox 360, PC

The sequel is in the pre-alpha stages of development. Far Cry 3 takes place on a tropical island found somewhere at the intersection of the Indian and Pacific Oceans. However, Patrick Redding, a Ubisoft story designer, mentioned that an Antarctic setting is a possibility for future games. The main goal of the game is to escape from the islands (as there will be more than one, mentioned by Dan Hay) and its crazed inhabitants.

Far Cry 3 returns the series to a tropical setting, similar to the first game. Players will assume the role of a protagonist known as Jason Brody, a tourist who has been stranded on an island chain that has been in the grips of violent local conflict for many years. Jason has been separated from his girlfriend and, in his search for her, developers have stated he will have to deal with a wide cast of mostly unstable characters who have been trapped on these islands for some time. In the short demo trailer that, as of June 2011, is the only gameplay footage released so far, Jason interacts with one such character, named Vaas (voiced by Michael Mando), who gives an unsettling monologue about the nature of insanity before trying to drown Jason by anchoring him to a cinder block and throwing him into a natural pool of water that has clearly been used repeatedly for this purpose. Details of Jason's backstory have yet to be provided, aside from the fact that developers have stated that he possesses a strong skillset as a combatant and survivalist that give him a fighting chance in the desperate circumstances he constantly finds himself in during the events of the game. Developers have also stated that the intended tone of the game will be one of realism and intensity and an attempt to invoke a visceral and constant feeling of danger in the player

Nope. Far Cry 3 is a brand new story with new locations (it will be set on two different islands) and brand new characters.

If they go back to the roots with Far Cry 1, I will scream in joy (especially if we get a map editor again). They need to leave Far Cry 2 far far behind them and forget about that travesty. Based on the graphics in the screenshots and videos, it looks much more tropical and colorful like the first one as well.

I actually enjoyed FC2. It had some awful design choices (respawning guard posts) and iffy AI, but overall it was something new and interesting. I loved exploring the deserts and jungles and sniping fools from a mile away. I hope FC3 takes the good from FC2 and really fleshes it out.

Exactly my thoughts. Apart from the guardposts and dodgy AI, Far Cry 2 was a really enjoyable game. Like you, I loved sniping enemies from a mile away before making my way through the camp. According to Ubisoft, there will be more stealth options which is good because the guardposts will be returning, although not as many, and so will jamming of the guns.

Why? They're reducing the number of guardposts and making them more varied and as for the gun jamming, well, no comments have been made yet about how often it will be but I thought it added tension to the game. You'd never know when a gun would jam and if it did, you'd have a sense of urgency as you search for cover so you can unjam it. I'd love for it to come back.

Yes, without a doubt. I'll admit that coming across guardposts all the time can get annoying, and the AI is far from perfect, but it's a beautiful-looking game and you can have some pretty intense firefights. And while the online isn't that good, the map creator that comes bundled with the game is awesome.

See, I'm struggling to get into Crysis 2. I love the concept of being able to choose how you go about completing a mission by using stealth, offense or defense but I just can't actually feel myself being drawn into it. Whereas Far Cry 3 already has my full attention. The setting, scenery and options of how you complete a mission all have me intrigued.

Thats one thing I loved about FC2. How you approach every situation was completely up to you. You could go balls-to-the-wall and unload on everything. You could sneak around the side planting IEDs on their vehicles. You could start a fire and let it sweep through the area. Pretty much anything was possible. It was pretty awesome.

And all of that is returning in Far Cry 3, only improved and with more options. I used to love spreading fire and watching chaos take over the camps. It's always fun starting fire near explosive barrels, too, only adds to the destruction after all.

It looks like Far Cry 3 is playable at Gamescom so there should be a ton of news, video and information during the conference. It is possible they got the elements of 1 and 2 combined in 3.

From the sounds of it, Far Cry 3 will also be demoed (whether we get to play it not is unknown at the moment) at the GAMEFest next month. I should be attending so I can get back to you with new info and any pics/videos I take, if thats permitted.

hope I'm not necrothreading too much but I didn't find any "official" Fra Cry 3 thread

I need advice : I'm not a good FPS player, I finished Bioshock and pltinumed Borderlands, but couldn't go far into Resistance (couldn't even get to the point where you're modified). Is there any hope I can have fun with Far Cry 3? Seems there's some stealth involved and I used I'd say "a sneaky approach" in BS and BL, first scouting enemy forces to weaken the defenses and killing lone patrols.

I also enjoyed fc2, it had its problems but was still an enjoyable experience.

FC3 though looks a hell of a lot better, but i do dislike some of the changes that make the game more simple, like more HUD and no weapon jamming. Still it is not much of a problem, the SP looks very well made. So hyped!

The MP though looks boring, bad and typical. No interest whatsoever.
