Gears of War 3 gets $30 'season pass,' first DLC in Novemberby Alexander Sliwinski on Aug 29th 2011 9:45AM

Gears of War 3 will have a "season pass" for its downloadable content -- a strategy we're seeing used by Noir-ly everyone with a long term, post-launch DLC plan. Microsoft claims the 2400 Microsoft point ($30) season pass will "guarantee a 33 percent discount on the game add-ons," compared to purchasing them individually when released. The pass will be available on September 20 and include an "exclusive" Liquid Metal Weapon Set.
The season pass will cover the "first four" installments of DLC, which will be released over the next year, with the first planned for November. No word yet if there will be more beyond that to squeeze from, er, generously discount to Gears fans.
Gears of War 3 launches in Standard ($60), Limited ($80) and Epic ($150) editions on September 20

Omg, only three weeks away until gears.
I heard there might actually be dlc for single-player or did I just mis-read something somewhere?
Anyway, on the shelf on this. If it were any other game I'd laugh and walk away, but Gears/Uncharted are the only game I bought multiplayer dlc for.

Is it me ore is that a big rip off?
Im sure with 33% you will only save around $3.30 from each DLC, and for 4 that makes up about $13.20.
So your giving MS 30$ to save $13,20?
Or am i horribly wrong and need to never do maths again?

The DLC by itself is $45... there is a 33% savings with the season pass .. -$15 = $30.
Yes, you're wrong. Not horribly though.

A month before release and they are already plotting DLC releases. I'm not surprised. DLC is a cash cow. People pay extra for maps/content that should have been on the launch disk from the get go.
I don't really need a water cooler/remote control as of right now.

lol @ DLC being nearly the cost of the game itself.

This doesn't add up.
You pay $30 for a 33% discount on the future 4 DLC packs.
In order for this to make any amount of fiscal sense, the DLC packs are going to have to be ungodly expensive.

Bluh.. ? I'm not made of money, Epic. I'll buy your game, but that's all. Maybe if there's a pack holding all the DLC some time down the line like with Gears 2, I might reconsider.

No it's not that expensive. I've already told you how much it would be. $30 represents a 33% discount from $45. If there are four packs, totaling $45, then they are going to cost a little over $11 a piece. If there are three, then they'll cost $15 a piece.
@ $30 for 3 packs, you're paying $10 each instead of $15.
@ $30 for 4 packs, you're paying $7 each instead of $11.
(omitting the change here....)
It adds up just fine.

I read another article and it's not just map packs, but also additional story content for the campaign.

This is for gears fans. I wouldn't expect the average gamer to be excited by it. If you know you want the gears stuff on launch day, this is a good deal
Unicron I would be worried if they didn't have a business plan sorted for the next year of the games life. Launch day is not the end of a products life.
I work in the music industry and most b sides for singles, or remixes are made before the album drops(leaks more times than not) why don't they just put that on the album?

Exactly... for people like me, getting all the content anyways... this is a great idea. I'll just pony up the money ahead of time, save a few bucks, and get all the content as its released.

Please tell me you're joking. Did you think they keep working on the game up until the day before it releases?
Epic had to submit the final game (aka what will be on the disc) to MS months ago for certification. So since the beginning of summer they've been done with development. Do you think they've just been sitting around since then? No, they've been hard at work on the DLC for the past few months. The same DLC that could not be developed and ready for the deadline of when they had to submit the completed game to MS.
You can argue all you want that Epic purposely withheld content just to make it DLC but it would all be hearsay. They had a deadline to get the completed game out the window and since then they've been working on more content for the players.
Gears 3 has more content than any other shooter that has come out this year. If people don't want to buy the DLC then they'll still have plenty to enjoy.

This doesn't make sense. Nowhere does it say it's $45 dollars for the dlc. I haven't seen that in numerous articles. It just states it's 33% savings on up to 4 dlcs. So let's look at dollars and cents. Spend $30 and a 33% on this "$45" and that's $29.70 + $30 = $59.70 for all dlc and guns. Or I can spend $45 and get all the dlc and no guns I'll save my $14.70 for some other game.

The only downside to this is not knowing about the content you are paying for ahead of time. We're not aware of how long it will be and what it will be -- what kind of maps they are going to be etc.
