TGS: Vita Will Have External Battery Option

Worried about your new portable's battery life? Sony has an answer.

Sony's focus for TGS 2011 has undoubtedly been the upcoming launch of the PlayStation Vita. During its pre-show conference, the publisher revealed that the battery life for the new portable will last somewhere between 3 and 5 hours during normal gaming usage.

For some gamers, that amount of battery life is unacceptable. Fortunately Sony is preparing an answer. In our interview with SCEA Worldwide Studios President Shuhei Yoshida, we finally received confirmation that Sony is in fact developing an external battery for the Vita. Planning on playing your Vita for an extended trip? Toss down some money for this attachment.

Check out Yoshida-san himself giving us the news:

    Yoshida-san Confirms an External Battery

Of course there are several other peripherals heading to the Vita. But we want to know if you'll be planning on buying an external battery when you pick up your new system. Does this make the news about the relatively short battery life easier to stand?

I have a charger cell with about 7 different plug options. Hopefully Vita uses one of em. Most likely mini USB, then I'm in luck. It should give me about 2 charges.

Thats nice but i won't need it anyway, i play my handhelds at home 99% of the time
3-5 hours is ok for a device with such a big touchscreen - touchpad - 3G - Wifi etc. etc.

That is pretty awesome. Just when you thought the Vita had a slight blemish, they're just like BAM.
I dont think I'll get one or need one, but I saw many people slightly dissapointed about the 3-5 hrs across message boards, so there's clearly a demand for it

At this point it would take a LOT to sell me on a 3Ds.

This is what the battery pack supposedly looks like.

It's cheaper than Vita nowadays, gives you 2GBs of memory card space out of the box and most importantly:

    Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance
    Super Mario 3D Land
    Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright
    Bravely Default
    Beyond the Labyrinth
    Mario Kart 7
    Kid Icarus: Uprising
    Luigi's Mansion 2
    Ace Combat: Assault Horizon Legacy
    Tekken 3D: Prime Edition
    Bit.Trip Saga
    Fire Emblem 3DS
    Super Smash Bros.
    Professor Layton 5
    Theatrhythm Final Fantasy
    Fantasy Life
    Nano Assault
    Rune Factory 4
    Time Travelers
Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime 3
    Paper Mario
    Heroes of Ruin
    Resident Evil Revelations
    Monster Hunter Tri G
Zone of the Enders 3DS (?)
    Monster Hunter 4
    Animal Crossing
    Pilotwings Resort
    Culdcept 3DS
Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Overclocked
    Tales of the Abyss
    Harvest Moon
    Crush 3D
    Cave Story 3D
    Dead or Alive Dimensions
    Star Fox 64 3D
    Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars
Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D

has an awesome line-up of already released great games & promising upcoming games. I don't understand why you even try to put up an act like you ever even considered buying 3DS or know shit about it. No matter if it has "taken" series like Monster Hunter, Resident Evil, Kingdom Hearts & possibly Zone of the Enders away from Sony. If it was the other way around, you'd be sure to announce the superiority of Vita.

Vita seems to be a wonderful device and its launch/Spring 2012 line-up is truly extra-ordinary, but at this moment it and 3DS are incredibly even overall.

I think the battery life is quit eimpressive considering the power that OLED screen consumes and the 4 processors evident in the console. As for the 3DS......that is just something out of the Vita's league.

Gentlemen let's draw the Vita Vs 3DS discussion to a close in this thread. Feel free to create a Vita Vs 3DS thread in the multi plat section, I'll gladly take part in a sensible discussion.

Yeah lets leave the 3DS out of all Vita threads please. There is no need for it frankly - buy both and enjoy both. After-all you never know if there will be portable gaming machines like these ever again.

Anyway regards to this external battery we need two key bits of information. How long it lasts and how much it is.

It is definitely a very good move by Sony though.

Should be a decent boost, even if it doesn't double the battery like. The PSVita internal battery has a 2,200 mAh capacity; the portable charger has a 5,000 mAh capacity.

Thanks Ryunosuke. I saw that information yesterday. Interestingly it is scheduled for a 2012 launch. No pricing confirmed. Dimensions are roughly 7cm by 7cm - so pretty compact I would say. If 2200mah gives about 3-5 hours I can see this unit providing an additional 3-5 hours also.

It is all on the following link:

Almost seems purposeful that they gave Vita lower batter life so they could sell these things. smh

    - a part of me thought that as well. But perhaps the real answer is a larger battery would just be too large and thus not fit into the small internal shell of the Vita.

The external pack is large in capacity and small in size. Not that bad.

I don't plan on getting one though. I think the Vita's internal battery will be enough for me.
And if it's not enough, I'd prefer a more versatile battery that could charge the iPhone as well, like the Energizer XP8000.

They will probably end up costing the same.

So you should understand that there's very little Sony can do to the battery life of Vita at the moment. They'd either have to delay Vita for as long as it takes for them to develop more energy-efficient and/or smaller parts or they'd have to make Vita bigger to accomodate either a single bigger battery or to have more than one battery (kinda like iPads and similar which have, like 4 batteries). Neither are options they can take. They need to get Vita out right now to start making money with it and there's a large enough percentage of people who seem to think that Vita, as it is, is too big, so they can't make it any bigger.

Besides, it's the same battery life as PSP & 3DS, which is quite a feat for such a powerhouse.

The progress in battery technology that is usable in mass market electronis has stalled. Until there's some breakthrough in it, we ain't going to see 10-20 hour battery life with handhelds (nor smarthphones when it's under heavy usage, for that matter)

I'm not going to speculate as to what they could or couldn't do... frankly, that's all your post is; speculation. Until we see some real stats on how much power it uses, etc., all we have are assumptions.
