Mafia Game Sign-Up Thread
Is this the first on the website? Anyway…
I have a lot of fun playing these and I thought it’d be cool to try one on this forum. Honestly, I’m surprised it hasn’t been tried yet. This was a party game meant to be done in person, but has been adapted to online play and I hope to get enough people so they can try it out for themselves.
I’m hoping for around 25, but at least twenty will suffice.
This might seem like a lot, but the game is really simple.
What is a Mafia Game?
A party game where players are divided into two teams: the civilians or mafia.
Players are secretly assigned roles: either "mafia," who know each other; or "civilians," who know only the number of mafia amongst them.
There are two phases: the day and night.
In the game's "night" phase the mafia kill off a townsperson and special civilians use their powers.
During the day phase, all of the surviving players debate the identities of the mafia and vote to eliminate a suspect. Play continues until all of the mafia have been eliminated, or until the mafia outnumber/equal the civilians.
Game Details
Day/night cycles
At the start of each cycle the narrator will let everyone know with a post in the game how long each cycle will last.
Lynch Votes
At the start of every day cycle, the narrator will notify the players as to how many votes are required to have someone lynched. There are two kinds though, unanimous and regular.
A unanimous lynch vote is when nearly all the players vote to lynch someone. When the final vote is cast the day cycle will end.
A regular lynch vote is when around half the players vote to lynch someone, but the day cycle will end as scheduled. If the tally isn’t met, it will result in a “no lynch.”
* Players are allowed to change their lynch vote how many times they want.
* Lynch votes must be bolded so the narrator can spot it easier.
* Players may vote to lynch no one. If enough vote to not lynch then no one will be killed during the day cycle.
To lynch:
Lynch: (Insert name)
To un-lynch or change:
Unlynch: (Insert name)
To not lynch:
No Lynch
* Note – Not voting at all does not equate to “No lynch.”
Last Gasps
When a civilian is killed they are allowed a “Last Gasp.” A “Last Gasp” is your parting message and the player will have one last chance to say something. They pm the narrator their “Last Gasp” and the narrator posts it in the game for everyone to read. After that the player is dead and is no longer allowed to post. Mafia are not allowed a “Last Gasp.”
Roles
There are several special roles, but since this is the first I figure it’d be best to just stick to the essentials. I already changed enough.
Narrator – The overseer of the game. This person assigns the roles (randomly) to all the participants and moderates the game. At the end of each day/night cycle, the narrator tells a little story to forward the game. The story is just for substance and no clues will be revealed in the narrative.
Civilians – The majority of the players, they have no special powers and don’t know who anyone else is. During the day, the civilians debate about who to lynch. They are allowed to continue talking during the night cycle, but that’s it.
Mafia – Unlike the civilians, the mafia all know who each other are and are allowed to communicate to each other privately during the day/night cycles (via pm or email). During the night cycle, the mafia must choose who they want to kill and send that name to the narrator.
Inspector (civilian) – During each night cycle, the inspector may send one name to the narrator about who they want to investigate. The narrator will reply saying whether the person is “innocent” (civilian) or “guilty” (mafia). However, if the vigilante has killed someone with their special ability, their name will turn up “guilty.”
Medic (civilian) – During each night, the medic may choose one person they will like to protect from the mafia and send that name to the narrator. If the mafia target that person the same night then the person will be saved.
Vigilante (civilian) – A regular civilian, but should the Inspector or Medic get killed, the vigilante is allowed one kill to use during the night cycle for each. Saving the kills for a later cycle is allowed. However, if the mafia target the vigilante, the narrator shall notify the vigilante and the vigilante will be allowed to kill off a player of their choosing. The vigilante is allowed only one kill during the night cycle though, so no double or triple killings are allowed.
Rules:
Editing posts:
Players are not allowed to edit any post under any circumstances. This is a investigative mind-game and tampering with post will have you removed from the game immediately and you’ll be banned from the next mafia game (If there is one). If you have to, double and triple posting is allowed. BUT NO EDITING.
Inactivity:
If you’re not going to play, don’t sign up. This is a game where players have to read one another to decide who is who. You have to post at least once during the day cycle (Something about the game and not “hi” then leave) and/or cast a vote (Whether “lynch” or “no-lynch”). If you fail to do so you’ll be removed immediately and banned from the next game (If there is one).
However, if there’s a reason you can’t participate as much (Something serious happening in life or work took over) then say so. This happens and is understandable.
Conduct
This game is meant to be fun. I do believe in busting balls and antagonizing people to get them to talk, however serious harassment of other players is not cool and will get you removed immediately and banned from the next game.
Also, civilians are not allowed to talk about the game outside the game to other players. This is cheating and will get you removed from the current game and banned from the next one.
Third, after a player has been killed they are NOT allowed to keep posting in the game. It’s distracting and will get you banned, yadda, yadda, yadda.
This is necessary for a fair, fun, and smooth experience.
