my phat died for a second time the other day. has a dvd of the x files season 8 stuck in it.
paid $149 to have it repaired, maybe 7 months ago?? barely used it, (as i got a new slim on the cheap) mainly for movies in the bedroom, and was quite disappointed to find out it has died again. i have been reading at a few places that any repair thats done to it, isn't permanent, and you won't get the same amount of use out of it as if it were brand new.Disclaimer: I may or may not know what I'm talking about.

I didn't send it to Sony. I don't trust sending items like that through the post that can't be replaced if lost.
I took it to a console repair place that had a good rep, they even had a 12 month warranty (i lost the receipt) but now the warranty they offer is only 3 months. they re-flow the motherboard?? Which I thought sounded a-ok, but I now find out it seems to be only a temporary fix.Disclaimer: I may or may not know what I'm talking about.

PCs are very much like Air Conditioners.
They both become utterly useless once you start to open up Windows....

$150-200 FOR A BROKEN BC PS3? o_O?
I can get them for $50-75 easily.........
Working ones, sure you can get 150-200 for them, but not for a non functioning units.
I would never "downgrade" a fully functional BC20/60 GB unit or even a BC80GB unit to a slim. If it's broken, thats a whole different story and requires more thought tho.
*Side note: Not saying this is what your suggesting, just saying in general.
People who temp fix their broken PS3s and turn around selling them as perfectly functional units while not mentioning the system has died and has been repaired and how? It disgusts me in all honesty.Last edited by faaeng; 10-12-2011 at 19:51.

I will attempt a temp fix tomorrow using guides I came across on youtube and such to get it working long enough to sell it and get a media streamer like the Live TV form Western digital.
Are they any good?

Reflowing is basically the at home fix, Reballing is a much better fix.
Really? wish I'd have known that, My launch day 60gb just died on me and I went and picked up a 320gb slim for $299 (uncharted Bundle)
which model do you have? If you have a 20/60 I'm not sure how you can get the disc out if you have the YLOD, but if you have a 40/80 you should be able to do the fan test trick and get the disc out that way. turn off the system (from the switch in the back) turn it back on while holding the eject button for like 5-10 seconds and then the fan should kick on and then while it's doing that just keep hitting eject and it should work. There are plenty of Youtube vids on how to do it.
EDIT: the system has been fixed once before right? so even if you do the fix (reflow by using a heat gun) it'll last even less time than the first fix. each time you do that the fix will last less and less time. I'd imagine you may get a day or few hours out of it. Maybe a week if you're lucky.
I did the reflow on mine and it lasted all of 15 seconds.
