I have a 40g ps3 from 2008. In June of this year I got the YLOD (yellow light of death, system won't power on) and sent it to sony to repair for $99. Just after 3 months when the warranty was over, the YLOD happened again. I didn't even play my PS3 much during those 3 months. I got them to agree to repair it free of charge after much debate but asked them to consider replacing the unit because I didn't believe another repair for the same reason would be a long term fix. They didn't replace it and just fixed it. Now I'm afraid that the system will play for a little while and break again. My question is has anyone sent their system in for repair to sony and had it be a long term fix? I know there is a do it your self method out there with a heat gun but I didn't choose to do that because I heard it would break again, I chose to send it to Sony because I figured they would have a way to fix it much better but apparently it is a short term fix as well. Buying another PS3 is not an option, I have a bad experience now with this one.

I got my old 80gb one fixed and only used it for blurays after i got a new slim, it lasted about a year or so. I would say stop getting it repaired and sell it for parts on ebay and just buy a slim.

These fixes are not permanent. What they are doing is probably reflowing it. Your best bet is to make a back up of your system, sell it off, and go buy a new one. It's better than dropping $100 to keep fixing it. If you want a permanent solution, you need to look at reballing, but it costs more money. You can buy a new ps3 for $250 so I don't see a reason to keep fixing it. The new systems are a lot better than the old ones.

Definitely only temporary fixes from Sony. The systems are low enough now that buying a new one makes plenty of sense if you want to keep playing PS3 games.

Thanks, I'm convinced now that it's not long term. I'll probably trade it in once I get this back. It's shame, I really think Sony needs to do something to compensate owners that have systems with these problems. A system like this shouldn't break after 3 years.

With proper care that system might have lasted you another five, but no one takes proper care of electronics like this(takes up to much time) TBH i think your lucky that 40gb lasted you 3 years, those if i recall were not the best of the lot.
