Are console exclusives dead?

Did you all ever think that most gamers look at the PS3 exclusives and only like a few of them?

How did you come to that conclusion?

Did you all ever think that most gamers look at the PS3 exclusives and only like a few of them? Sure there are more than the PS3, but the only ones I'm interested in is Uncharted and God of War. I am SURE than there are gamers out there that don't like either of those two games but maybe one or two different PS3 exclusives.

Just because a game is exclusive it doesn't mean that ALL gamers like them. And perhaps some gamers can only afford one console and would rather have a combination Halo or Forza or Fable or whatever than a combination of the few PS3 exclusives that they prefer.

I feel bad for the person that buys a console just because it has more exclusives, even if they don't like them.

I think the numbers are proving that exclusives don't matter as much as some believe they do. Just to those who play the mines vs yours game. It all depends on the resources that a studio want to put towards developing a game. The more of it you put into the game the better it will be. I do see the number of exclusives downsizing in the future with the price of development getting higher. It will be even harder next gen for studios to make a profit. sadly we will see more of them close down because they wont be able to sustain.

Why? It gives them more of an option when they're out shopping for games, whilst still having the option to get the mighty 3rd party offerings out there

I doubt this. Next gen probably isn't going to be a huge graphical leap, so development time wont be drastically longer. Exclusives, and Sony's first party are here for the long haul, it's a part of the companies identity and strategy.

Yep exactly. And having strong first party ensures that those exclusives that differentiate your console will never end up on a competitors platform due to development costs or anything else.

its not dead, they just have not produced games that are exclusive enough to be branded with that title... Yes a few have came up

But its not dead by any means, Next gen we will see a massive fight for exclusive titles

I do agree that not everybody has the same tastes. But saying "most" gamers only see a few that they like is pure speculation.

If most gamers liked all of the PS3 exclusives, sales would be much higher. Let's face it, Sony isn't Nintendo when it comes to exclusives.

I don't think I mentioned any studio in particular. It is a fact that with each generation jump the cost of development will rise. There is no way around that. Some studios won't be able to take the same loss as last gen. Sony has lots of studios so the risk for them is even higher.

I blame that on Sony not marketing all their games like MS does. GT5 sold over 7 million and U3 did quite well too. But with all Sony's exclusives they cant do massive marketing campaigns for each. MS only has a few so they can aggressively market those. U3 for example got some better marketing and did well because of it. But Sony needs serious help in the marketing dept.

Yeah well I think Sony covers so many genres that some of their exclusives are bound to be niche games and therefore not pull in blockbuster sales, so yeah I agree with you there. Sarcasm duely noted in the last part of your post.

That's exactly what I meant. Perhaps my earlier statement was an exaggeration to make my point but I personally believe that it's true.

That's why the PS2 was so wildley popular, because it had something for everyone. But not all of their games appealed to everyone.

Like I said, Uncharted and God of War, and to a lesser extent Ratchet and Clank, but that's really about it for me exclusive-wise. Hell, I'm not playing ANY exclusives right now and probably won't be for at least the next 6+ months.

There will be a big visual jump with the next generation. With new hardware, we will get immense detail in the environment and characters, cinematic post process, real-time lighting, beautiful weather effects, and next generation particles systems.

well one having more, does not mean it is the best console to go for... Less is more and more is to much in some case's

So exclusive for one console may not work out always the best option.


But i still stand by what i said and that is exclusive's are not dead, but not that many this gen. Next Gen will be the hottest and most massive exclusive title Battle ever and wait and see the Library then....

I bought my PS3 in 2007 based on 2 exclusives GT5 and MGS4 I will not be letting exclusives sway my decision making in future console purchases instead it will be on what the console currently offers me.

Yup, same here. If I were to pick out my top 5 favorite multiplatform games this year, and pick out my favorite top 5 exclusive games this year, the multiplatform games would garner much better ratings from me, and much more play time.
