The last frontier of the old PS3forums.com is gone, farewell Coma and farewell what once was one of the best forums on the Internet. Only one way to go after you've been on the top I suppose.

That's quite the pessimistic view. The site might not be what it once was, but it has a bright future nonetheless. As Steve Jobs once said, the greatest invention of life is the way the old are cleared out to make way for the new. Of course we're not talking about death right now, but we see something similar happening here now. Some of the older members are leaving the forums to devote their time to other things that are of higher importance, while a plethora of new people, like Mr. Bishop, are helping reinvent this site into something bigger and better than ever before.
This is still, no matter how much has changed, one of my favorite communities on the web.SchaffinOSX

Death is indeed the greatest single invention, unfortunately that does not mean it always strike at the most opportune time. I don't see any signs of a reinvention nor strong leadership which is required in a transition. These new changes give me 0% confidence going forward, I believe Coma with his knowledge of what the forum once was, and a great knowledge of the community would have been an incredible resource for years even in a limited capacity.

There's no doubt that Coma was a strong community manager while he was active, and he has been here longer than a great deal of us. But, from my perspective, the site is in the hands of people who are genuinely interested in seeing it move forward. Mr. Bishop might be fairly new around these parts, but he's shown a general interesting in improving the website, and we've seen a plethora of changes made in recent months. Of course all of these changes have been met with their fair share of criticism, but it is clear that what the community is interested in seeing is being taken into real consideration.
That is perhaps the biggest improvement the site has seen. I can remember a couple of years ago when it was all but impossible to get ahold of an administrator and the community was constantly raving about the administration ignoring them / not getting anything done.
Now things are getting done, and hopefully, once the rough edges are ironed out, the site will be in much better shape than ever before.SchaffinOSX

I don't see any improvements, we still can't read page two of our VM's. All I see is a lot of social media type of things in an age where people are getting tired of Facebook. If I wanted to "Like" content I'd would have joined FB years ago.
Shit is being thrown at the wall to see if it sticks but there's no two-year plan from what an outsider can tell.

Didn't even think to check. Definitely agree that that needs to be fixed. As for a two year plan of sorts, I agree in that it would be nice to know the direction that the community is headed. It has seemed like things have been in free fall for a little while, and personally, I feel that the site is improving. But it is clear that we need a more definitive direction for the community, so that we can truly ground ourselves and start determine how we're going to get to our destination.
Good points.SchaffinOSX

What's all this two year plan stuff about?? Why do we / they need some master plan....
I guess the two year plan is to continuing running a playstation centric news / forum service.. Done.
Yeah, there are some things that haven't been fixed while they're still adding new stuff... but tbh, that's exactly the way things were done in the ps3forums glory days of old that everyone seems to talking about so much. So things haven't changed all that much :P

In any business you need to understand not only what business your in but also where you want to head. You say the plan is to run a PS centric website, well that opens you up to be disrupted very easily - mobile gaming will become significantly bigger than console gaming in a short amount of time so would a PS centric website need to address that before another site does? Well, according to disruption theory yes you need to.
Furthermore. It'd be nice to know if this shift of focus from quality posts to more of a chatty, social stile is the future of the site since people like me who like to make longer posts with a more in-depth discussion may want to reconsider.
I personally can't recall bugs being left for over a year while new, incomplete, features were added prior to this.Last edited by Tutankhamun; 11-05-2011 at 00:09.

Where is it heading...? Where I let it!

Really though... I don't really care where it's going. I'll just keep discussing topics that interest me, reply, threads, etc., until such time as it no longer interests me. I don't need to see into the future. I'll know when my time is up.

Some of the "bugs" are things that can't be fixed readily. There are considerations for time, expense, etc.. when addressing some of these. To put it bluntly, the previous site owners bent us all over. They rushed and hacked the upgrade to vb4.0 which broke everything. All this time, Mr B. and crew have been working a list spanning many, many pages of a document of things that need fixing. So much more important stuff needs worked on before some of the smaller stuff.
So, in an effort to try and make the forums a more enjoyable place, we decided to implement these plug ins. No one ever said they would launch fully fleshed. Hell, we will probably still be adding features to the shop and other things well into the new year. Why you even think you have a leg to criticize it for being launched incomplete is beyond me. We couldn't plan for every eventuality, so there were bound to be a couple of issues. The shop will never be complete. Just a few mins ago, I downloaded a pack of 545 icons to add for purchase. That will take weeks at least. The other features have a whole mess of stuff we didn't even activate because we have to get it all set up. But again, those are extra features that are in addition to the basics you have in place now. Not incomplete, just not fully deployed. Some of the things will never see the light of day, but that is by choice.
What we put in place isn't incomplete. It is basic. Did we have some bumps with options being enabled that shouldn't be? yup. but those are fixed now. It is up to us now to expand it to fit the forum needs.
so don't use it? the only way it affects you is if someone likes your post, you get points. It is an optional feature that many have used on other sites and have asked us for. We felt it was a good fit for PSU.

This entire like/dislike system seems to be something we don't need around here at all. I can't see how anyone thought that it was a good idea with the added repercussions it brings with those options enabled. A THANKS button, ok, makes sense if someone likes to be recognized visually for all to see; personally, I don't care either way on that one. What does someone disliking a post do for the forum? Why does it matter at all? Wouldn't it be better for people to show their disapproval with a rebuttal post instead of down ranking posts? This isn't Joystiq or Engadget, <insert the many sites that use that horrid system>.
Again, this penalizes people for posting their opinions, news, etc.Last edited by F34R; 11-05-2011 at 10:34.
