I didn't get a chance to buy the PS3 on launch, but I got it almost one year later, on my birthday, in September. I got it from Ebay and I had mix-up with the seller. In the description, it said it would come with a DS3 Six Axis controller and it didn't. Sent him e-mail, he sent me some piece of shit third party controller. Sent him another e-mail. He didn't reply. Had to get one myself. The first game I had and still have for PS3 is Rainbow Six Vegas. I was stunned by the CGI trailer because I thought that's the kinda graphics we'll get with each game from now on, and I kinda was hoping for next-gen to have CGI-like gameplay and graphics, but Uncharted and GT5 do that.
Unfortunately, this year, my 80gb phat ps3 died with the YLOD while I was playing Fallout New Vegas. Luckily, I looked on youtube for the quick fan fix and it worked! I can still power it up today but it doesn't mean it will work as long anymore. I got the slim instead. I'm dissapointed that it's not backwards compatible. Sure would have loved to play San Andreas again.
But my top 5 games are:
MGS4
Red Dead Redemption
Deus Ex Human Revolution
Mortal Kombat
Gran Turismo 5

I've owned a PS3 since launch. It's an amazing console...easily the best console of the current generation IMO. Excellent exclusives, tried and true controller design, evolving online services (still behind XBL, but it works), and great value.
My favorite titles/series thus far (subject to change):
MGS4
Uncharted series
Assassins Creed series
Mass Effect 2
Deus Ex: Human Revolution

My PS3 has been of an expensive retro game system for me. I love all the old school type games from the PS Store like Super Star Dust, Championship PacMan, and the new Burger Time World Tour.

Just like every other Playstation console launch, the PS3 launch was just a jaw dropping moment for me since I didnt care how much it was, I wanted it so bad. Eventually managed to get one a few years later. So here to another 5 years.

Long may it live. Five years is not that long, and I believe that there is more to be squeezed out of this console before it is laid to rest. Just look at how well the PS2 is thriving. They are still making games for that console, even thought they were replaced YEARS ago.

I bought a PS3 at launch along with a copy of Resistance. I also ended up getting Motorstorm and thinking what an awesome off road game. I haven't seen any off road game as epic as the Motorstorm series on any other platform. Also free online. Seems like it was just yesterday.

As far as I know, the last PS2 game people really cared about, myself included, was Persona 4 and that was back in 2008. It doesn't make sense to continue releasing games on a last-gen console when popular development studios are already thinking about developing games on the next generation of home consoles.

will likely never happen on consoles due to the ideology behind it.
If Sony ever charged for PSN, it won't be the one we see now. Most likely they will keep online play free (probably the basic part of it).PSN while it is getting better its still not great and not worth paying for.Praise the lord for Ni No Kuni!

Overall, I've been extremely happy with my purchase. This being my first Sony console, I can safely say that it won't be my last.

I purchased my first PS3 in January 2007. This after going through 4 XBOX 360's in 2006. It was $600 and not as many games, obviously, but at least it worked every time I turned it on!
My top 5 gaming experiences on the PS3 would have to be:
- Borderlands
- Fallout 3
- Rainbow Six Vegas
- Bioshock
- Gran Turismo 5
Though, only the lack of time keeps me from playing more games.
Remember, that some of the best games for the PS2 came much later in that consoles life-cycle. So, the best of PS3 gaming is still to come!

My thoughts? I feel Sony took a MASSIVE leap backwards, the PS3 in no way, shape or form has even remotely touched the PS2 or PS1 but in their defense a great deal of my issues this gen seem to be a generation thing not limited to system. Sure from a console standpoint it's probably given me more hours of enjoyment than other current systems but in the end, unlike the PS2 the PS3 has helped cement me as a PC gamer. Gathering decent information for things has become such a hassle sometimes, seems the percentage of morons attached to the playstation brand has increased to obscene levels with all forums and news articles being bombarded with undiluted crap from people who can't possible conceive of anything being done as bad, games being sometimes 2 hours long are called perfect and complete to excuse the day one DLC that adds the side quests other generations use to include in bucketloads before... the PS3 has harmed my outlook on both Sony and consoles in general, I love gaming and have had some great times but honestly... I have without a shadow of a doubt put at least 10 times more hours playing PS2 games I've come across on my PS3 then actual PS3 games
if I am in the PS3 or 360 section I will NOT post about the competitor just to please people, if you want to know what I think about the competitor link me to a thread in the appropriate section

i got my ps3 in december of '06 i was so excited because 600 dollars seemed out of reach. i loved the BC of it and even bought some ps2 games just for that reason. well in '08 i think it died on me, but i sent it in and got a refurb. it seemed brand new so i was happy. but it only lasted a month or two before that one died. really annoyed i got a ps3 slim i time for uncharted 2. the thing works beautifully and i think i won't have any problems with it dying on me (knock on wood). so in all i've spent over 1000 on systems only to have 2 of them crap out on me. but that will not deter me because Sony has had some of the best games/franchises i've ever experienced. and i am really looking forward to Ps4 but i will wait this time until the slim version comes out lol
favorite games would have to include Batman: Arkham City, MGS4, Ratchet and Clank: A Crack in Time, Demon's Souls, God of War III, and Nier to name only 5
Let's be honest: You sleep with anything that walks on two legs. Sometimes, you're not even that discriminating

I got in 2007 with Resistance and Motorstorm, and tbh, seems like yesterday. I don't think we should see a next generation anytime soon, current consoles still have a lot to offer. Sure, who doesn't like new, awesome graphics? I do, but there will be time for that, now they should just focus on the consoles they've already mastered instead of starting from scratch on new ones. Yes, I would love to see Uncharted 4 with CGi graphics, but I can wait.
Anyway that PS3 (60GB) died last year, so I got a Slim. My highlight is Uncharted 2 without a doubt.

5 years later, it is solid. Granted, I haven't had mine for 5 years...got mine in March of 2008. But even so, still solid for me. Only one YLOD repair, but over all the console has been built like a tank. Free online has been decent. The Blu-ray movies have been the BEST I have ever seen at home in my home theater. The XMB has always been running at a rock solid 1080p for me. Sony has continued to address gamer's requests for XMB features and improvements, and I have liked each and everyone of those from what I remember. The 7.1 TruHD is untouched by even some of the best equipment out there.
Games have been pretty good. Not really a library arsenal that has pleased my personal gaming tastes, and has fallen short in the multi platform area and the pesky mandatory installs.
But 5 years later, I give it a 8/10. When I first got it, I would have given it a 5/10. But time, use, and product/PSN improvements through firmware have really improved the PS3 experience. No doubt the PS4 will be mine on day one the next time around (unless it's $600..then I will wait a bit

I've had mine since launch (march 2007) and I'm happy with my purchase but if there is one thing I regret it's buying it at launch, I played PS2 games on the system for like a whole year.
But the overall experience has been great, like Soldier said when I got it I would have given it a 5 but now it's a 10
