Damn, didn't realise the Alien franchise was so deep!
Although really, i haven't seen Alien since i was 8 so my memory is a bit jaded almost 30 years on

-
02-29-2012 #54
I honestly wouldn't say that Alien is that deep strictly speaking. The depth for me came from hearing the director commentary. The ideas and universe within Ridley's mind. His mindset while making the movie, the theories and such of the science fiction. I know that sounds a bit redundant.

i love watching the Making of ALIEN on the second DVD, it's wayy fuckin deep. then cameron had to screw it up

Let's be honest: You sleep with anything that walks on two legs. Sometimes, you're not even that discriminating

I don't think Cameron screwed up anything. Many consider Aliens to be one of the few sequels out there that was actually as good or better than the original.
I mean consider what Scott is doing with Prometheus- he's making it bigger, broader, dealing with larger issues. But he's still in science fiction horror/action. He didn't want to do another 5 people in a small ship get picked off by a monster/ghost/alien.
So by that same token, why would Cameron want to do that either with his sequel? Aliens is a classic, and for good reason. It's just that Scott and Cameron have different ideas for their science fiction.
-
02-29-2012 #58
The point he was making is that Ridley makes movies with things to think about, stories and theories behind various things people don't even realize. Cameron just put guns in their hands. I'm not saying Aliens was bad, it's a fun sequel, but it's definitely removed of the depth the first one had.
Prometheus is a far cry from what Cameron would do. Just because it's bigger doesn't mean it pulls toward Cameron. The core of the movie is going to be the thought and theory behind it all, not just a story of them fighting their way out.

-__- Did I SAY just because it's 'bigger' it would pull towards Cameron? No.
Also I'd argue that Scott pulls "Camerons" fairly routinely- Black Hawk Down and Robin Hood come to mind imo. Neither of those movies are any 'deeper' than Avatar. Arguably both fall far short from the kind of interesting thoughts that Terminator caused audiences to feel.
I think you're putting Cameron in a box and saying "lol you're just the Michael Bay of cerebral sci fi" imo. Not saying I don't think Scott routinely goes deeper than Cameron, but I'm a bit put out by alot of the negative talk aimed at Cameron in this thread.
Without Cameron's Aliens we would probably not have many of the tropes and themes we enjoy now- both in movies and video games. He took where Heinland left off with his Starship Troopers novels- he really put the "Space Marines" and "Drop ships" into vogue.
He also helped bring the whole "Giger-esque" war organisms into the mainstream as well.
For a few examples, we would certainly not have the UNSMC from Halo, or the Tyranids and Space Marines from Warhammer 40,000. Nor the Imperial Guard!
Maybe even Chief and Doom guy would be omitted from history or radically changed.Last edited by Vulgotha; 03-01-2012 at 18:43.

The Alien series ended for me after Cameron, the other two were not that great, especially Resurrection. But I did like Ron Perlman. And can we just agree that both films were awesome in different ways? Alien was about the suspense of being stranded with an unknown life-form. Aliens is about knowing about it and surviving.

Seems like some Prometheus fans have unlocked a secret directory on the Weyland Industries website. This is what you end up seeing. It's pretty cool, I think. For those of you who can't see it, it's a high-res shot of the star chart from the trailer.
It is also my new desktop wallpaper.

I'm on my phone (obviously)... Can't wait to see this in HQ. Might be my favorite shot in the trailer. Might be a little too much for a desktop but I'll judge that when I see it.

Avatar has one of the most hand-holding scripts of recent times. It's not terrible but in NO WAY does that script deserve to go up against most films. Except Tron Legacy. That would be a proper comparison.... oh yea, and the whole acting thing as well.
Cameron has never been known for great scripts. Now of course Terminator was a classic, but Cameron then and Cameron now are two different people. No better than George Lucas at this point.I think you're putting Cameron in a box and saying "lol you're just the Michael Bay of cerebral sci fi" imo. Not saying I don't think Scott routinely goes deeper than Cameron, but I'm a bit put out by alot of the negative talk aimed at Cameron in this thread.
Cameron let's technology push the story (nowadays), pretty much on par with Bay having action push the story and by extension through Transformers it's technology pushing story.
EDIT: Blacksite... finally looked at the image fullscreen:
I might blackout from awesomeness... SO MUCH EFFING DETAIL! Ok, I gotta slow down and process it all. *faints*
Been a long time since I was excited about 3D. Now I am.
Lol, my screen is gonna have this image burned into it from looking at it for so long.Last edited by RedDragon7; 03-07-2012 at 06:03.

I completely agree with the bold but the underlined was too harsh imo.
For George Lucas if knowing back then what i know now i really wouldnt have minded if George just vanished after the filming of The Last Crusade because that was the last movie he was a part of that was any good. I do not feel this way about Cameron. Cameron just feels out of touch and lost now imo.

Lucas had a tipping point. We may be looking at Cameron's right now. Doesn't seem like it yet but (if it's happening) it'll take hold.
In Cameron's mind, the industry is behind with 24fps. He's all about 60-120fps to accommodate 3D, and trying to start a movement changing theaters to accommodate this. My point being is that his mind is only about pushing technology and then wrapping a story around that. He thinks 3D is just as crucial to film as CGI. Not a big surprise since he was the one to push CGI to the next level with the Terminator franchise, but back then he was pushing technology because of a story. Now its reversed.
Look at it this way, Lucas is re-releasing his Star Wars films because of 3D. Guess whose also doing that with a film starring DiCaprio and a big ship. Just because of 3D.

you may be right about the future but right now i think Cameron is better than Lucas.

I will give Cameron some credit. At least he's not ridiculously milking the only franchise he created. Nor did he cast the WORST possible lead actor.

It is time my friends! Well, not quite yet but soon

A belated birthday present to me!Even though the full schedule was announced last week, new WonderCon-related events are being revealed all the time. Today's case in point, the announcement of a special trailer reveal for Ridley Scott's Prometheus to be held convention center-adjacent at the AMC Downtown Disney. Full, official details of the event are as follows:
On Saturday, March 17th at 4 p.m. PST/ 7 p.m. EST, legendary director Ridley Scott will premiere the first full trailer for one of 2012's most anticipated films, "Prometheus", at the AMC Downtown Disney in Anaheim, CA. This invite-only premiere will follow a 30 minutes Q&A session with the iconic director conducted by "Prometheus" writer/producer Damon Lindelof (Co-creator, Executive Producer and Writer of TV's "LOST").
Immediately following the live event, the new Prometheus trailer will be available online, so stay tuned.

I feel like news is pouring in left and right, now. New trailer, Q&A, and now this announcement:
Prometheus to be released in IMAX 3D.
Disclaimer: This will be what the kids are calling these days, LIEMAX. As in false IMAX. It's post-converted, meaning it'll be letterbox. There's no massive fullscreen shots/scenes in real IMAX. Nonetheless IMAX theaters still boast the best theater systems.
Here's the press release:
I'm not sure if I'll bother. A good, traditional theater with the movie showing in fullscreen there will work just as well, basicallyIt's hard to believe that one of many people's most anticipated movies of 2012, director Ridley Scott's Prometheus, is only three months away, but ComingSoon.net now has gotten word that 20th Century Fox plans on teaming with the IMAX Corporation to release Scott's very first movie in IMAX theaters.
It makes some sense because currently, there are no movies scheduled for an IMAX release in June and there are now enough digital IMAX theaters that multiple movies can be released in that format at any given time, which may happen if DreamWorks Animation goes with that format for their upcoming Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted.
Here's the official announcement:
IMAX Corporation and Twentieth Century Fox today announced that Prometheus, the summer’s scariest action event picture and director Ridley Scott’s return to the genre he helped define, will be digitally re-mastered into the immersive IMAX® 3D format and released in IMAX® digital and film theatres domestically and in a select number of IMAX theatres internationally, starting June 8, 2012.
Sir Ridley directs and produces the film, which is written by Jon Spaihts and Damon Lindelof. Prometheus: An IMAX 3D Experience features a stellar international cast that includes Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Guy Pearce, Idris Elba, Logan Marshall-Green and Charlize Theron.
“Ridley Scott is one of the best storytellers of our time, whose groundbreaking films Alienand Blade Runner changed the landscape of the science-fiction genre,” said Greg Foster, Chairman and President of IMAX Filmed Entertainment. “We’re excited about Prometheusand proud to add him to the prestigious list of directors whose films have been presented in IMAX.”
The IMAX release of Prometheus will be digitally re-mastered into the image and sound quality of The IMAX 3D Experience® with proprietary IMAX DMR® (Digital Re-mastering) technology. The crystal-clear images coupled with IMAX's customized theatre geometry and powerful digital audio create a unique environment that will make audiences feel as if they are in the movie.

No, no no... IMAX is pretty damn awesome. MI4 and of course TDK made wonderful use of aerial shots and epic action. Not to mention a very cool reveal of The Joker.
Now The Dark Knight Rises which is going way beyond anything else with just under half the movie in full IMAX. SICK!
And I will give Ridley a chance, test his use of 3D. I mean I watched Avatar several times in it, saw Transformers and Tron in 3D. I kind of owe it to THE man to see what he's capable of in that aspect. But I would understand if you guys don't bother with 3D. I pretty much stopped caring as well.
If this movie were in native IMAX and not 3D, I might just be in sci-fi heaven.Last edited by RedDragon7; 03-09-2012 at 08:17.
