Arkham City is not a great example of very good fighting mechanics.

I can't help but think that many of these suggestions would result in games that are competitive nightmares.

Fighting Games not developing enough?
Yeah, of course, disregard the Blazblue series entirely.
Also, Arkham fighting mechanics in a fight game would be... absurd to say the least. One player mashes X until the other player hits counter, then HE starts mashing X.
Also, the reason that so many fighting games is in 2D is that that's the best medium to input extremely intense and precise combos in, directions are clear and there wont be any real disruption to the super-combo by having the enemy move aside. Soul Calibur, for isntance, relies less on large, very advanced combos, simply because it is hard to input, and that game still fights in a very 2D way.
Also, if I am to be perfectly honest, I think Super Smash implemented a LOT of new things to the genre, I'd like to see a "standard" setup with those controls, 1v1. THAT would be something. The dash, the shield-rolls, the throws etc. But, again, due to all of those mechanics, it would be hard to implement a strong combo system.
Dissidia did a good job of changing the fightgames up as well. One hella big world, allong with a 3rd person view of your character, using target lock or not to get in and swinging with the other, avoiding the 2D style of every other game (soul Calibur is STILL very 2D in it's layout).
So yeah.
BlazBlue, Dissidia, Super Smash, all of them fairly recent compared to older fighters that are continuously remade, and they ALL brought plenty of new stuff or improved stuff to the market. There is no REAL need to "update" the fighting genre per say.

Really tho where can this genre go? Yeah it is a brick wall genre that will only get better graphics but the gameplay will remain the same. Then again we could say that about all genres, but unlike the rest you can not really make an in depth 4+ hour story mode for a fighting game. It is a special genre that you play because you love fighting games.

"Fighting games were changing too much" - Team Lethal
The problem was that fighting games were changing too much. Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter went back to their roots to fix their problems. Do not try to make fighting games more than what they are.

Most fighting games wouldn't use the freeflow combat system though since it mostly relies on a simple attack, stun, and counter mechanic, whereas fighting games like Guilty Gear X2 and Street Fighter employ a larger set of attacks and combos.
That's not to say that Batman: Arkham City isn't an enjoyable experience. It's just a different experience. The same thing can be said for JRPGs and WRPGs. They're both RPGs but neither of them are really superior to the other.Steam & PlayStation Network: BlacksitePSU | 3DS Friend Code: 1349-4916-2054

Well, it's not like I stated I would want to see Arkham City'e exact style of fighting used in a fighting game. I was only saying the quality of it. I look at how smooth and versatile it is in AC, then I look at how old and blocky fighting games are. It's pretty drastic, and developers are OK with not advancing the genre because it's easier for them.

I see what you mean there Rag.
Aaron is probably referring to the style of fighting, not the characters. SF and MK have more unrealistic moves and special powers/moves. For example, when Cyrax shoots bombs from his chest, or like Hadouken, and when Kung Lao spins and makes a blue tornado, you don't regularly see that from Tekken, but with SF and Mk you do. Furthermore, Tekken has more realistic fighting mechanics with less super powers and explosions. To me, Tekken is almost like MMA; but with different people and a few different things thrown in there.Last edited by wesmore24; 11-29-2011 at 23:32.

Why do people want Mortal Kombat to be replaced with "Arkham Asylum" gameplay mechanics?? That's dumbing down the game for the masses, and I don't want it.

can't really reinvent the wheel...
fighting game formula was pretty much perfected with the release of SSFIIT...
having said that though, I welcome whatever new ideas.

Anything outside of Virtua Fighter is not realistic because that's simply not what they are about. Virtua Fighter is actually about realistically implementing different fighting styles and their timing. Tekken is a combo fighter. It's about discovering the longest combo chain and then executing it. Street Fighter is about individual moves and a chess-like mind game. Blazblue is an intermediate between Tekken and SF. MK borrows the attention to moves from SF and the attention to combos from Tekken.

I think what he meant by that is that its realistic in the sense that you don't special powers or hyper combos and rage meters..it's literally pure fighting and skill. Yoshimitsu is my favorite fighter and I still can't master his moves! So in a sense, it's realistic than other fighters because it doesn't have some failsafe system like a hyper combo or x-factor and x-ray attack to give you an "edge" over your opponent in disparity.

What do people mean by "realistic"? Bcuz it seems people are complaining about unrealistic characters, which I fail to see how it matters.
