Sony Unveils PlayStation Plus Data For 2011

"$1,200 in savings for the year? That's a lot of money."

PlayStation Plus, Sony's optional PlayStation Network-centric subscription service, has plenty of supporters and detractors alike. Supporters eagerly point at all of the freebies and discounts they get, and the fact that PSN is still inherently free, while detractors tout the fact that you're essentially paying for the right to get those discounts.

But regardless of which side you fall on, it's hard to ignore the numbers. Sony today revealed that PlayStation Plus offered gamers over $1,200 in perks in 2011. That's 24 times the yearly investment necessary to be a PlayStation Plus member.

Sony offered PlayStation Plus gamers 17 separate free games in 2011, and discounted a staggering 132 more. In addition, Sony offered PS+ users 43 exclusive "Full Game Trials," which allow players to try a retail-style digital game for an hour before deciding if they want to purchase it or not.

More intangible offerings not included in Sony's monetary proclamation include access to four exclusive betas and six exclusive demos.

I've only recently signed up to Plus for 3 months. Got my initial 12 investment back in the first day. Wanted to try it out before Vita launched as I see it being a much more robust subscription as the Vita is geared towards downloading from the store

With the next couple months before my sub ends, I might break even. If I do, I'll probably resub.

I got more then my moneys worth so far, and I still got till like July or so. Granted a lot were titles I wouldnt buy myself, but I only had three or so I didnt enjoy. A lot of games surprised me with how fun they were.

Would gladly resub when I can.

Waste of money IMO. No point in paying if you can barely keep anything given for free after the sub is gone.

I used to feel the same way, but it was pointed out to me like this:

How many rental services do you know, that you keep content, if you cancel the subscriptions; i.e. netflix, gamefly, etc.?

    Makes sense

Yeah I'm kinda digging Plus right now, I love free $#@! - Like I said in my OP, I foresee it becoming a more robust/taken care of service once the Vita is out (hopefully)!

    So far so good

I got it about 3 months after it started i think ill keep it for life now as ive downloaded many of the free games. I dont want to loose em all and i like the offers it does pay for itself provideing you use the store alot which i do. I just downloaded the sam and max stuff not something i would have gone for if i was buying but had a bit of fun with em so far. Again if you look at it like that its another good thing.

I already extended my yearly subscription with their "20% off" deal. Gotta love the freebies!

I joined PS+. I noticed you can download the full game trial and get to play it for about an hour before you decide if you wanna buy it.

He finally gave you the codes then?

I love PS+. I have been a member since day 1 and I know I made my money back very quickly. I was a Qore subscriber so PS+ saved me on that yearly fee. So basically PS+ only really costs half since I was already going to pay for Qore.

My first year of PlayStation Plus ran out a few weeks ago. Right now, I just don't have the money to renew. The thing about PS+ for me is that while, yes, I can get a lot of things for free, take advantage of full-game trials, etc., those are things I wouldn't normally do to begin with. Before PS+, I very rarely purchased anything from the PlayStation Store due to a mere lack of interest. So essentially, PS+ doesn't really save me money, granted most of the things I got from it are things I wouldn't have normally downloaded to begin with.

That said, the PlayStation Store is constantly improving. More and more excellent content is being offered, so perhaps PS+ will become a viable option for me in the near future.
