Mortal Kombat developer NetherRealm Studios is taking a break from the fighting series after the release of its Xbox 360 and PS3 reboot earlier this year, it's confirmed.
According to studio head Ed Boon, the developer is taking a hiatus from the Mortal Kombat franchise to work on "a different project," though speaking to Gamespot he conceded that it's inevitable the dev will return to the fighter eventually.
Boon didn't offer any details on what the new project might be, though he did confirm that there are no more DLC plans for the latest MK release.
NetherRealm's latest title was Batman: Arkham City Lockdown for iPhone and iPad. Could the studio be bringing its blood and gore to the DC franchise in a home console game?

Good, I don't want an MK every two years, I already have all the characters unlocked...the next MK should be one of those adventure games like Shoalin Monks, but with Sub-Zero and Scorpion.
NetherRealm Studios should reboot MK completely. Like the fanmade Mortal Kombat Rebirth (Legacy?). That would be very interesting to see the series with a new fresh look.

I'm glad that they're doing this. Mortal Kombat 2011 was pretty much the greatest thing ever for me, since I grew up on MK2 and UMK3. I want the game to last a little longer before more gets churned out.
