http://www.computerandvideogames.com...claims-source/PlayStation 4's early technical specifications are looking "more powerful" than those of Microsoft's next-generation Xbox targets, according to PSM3's development sources.
Reporting via a PS4 news special in its latest issue, which hits news stands on Wednesday, January 11, the mag cites sources suggesting that Microsoft's machine will beat Sony's to market "if only by months". PSM3's sister mag, Xbox World, publishes a similar source-digging next-gen special in its issue out on the same day, claiming that the next Xbox will ship in late 2013 with a PowerPC-based processor from IBM and 'Kinect 2.0' out of the box.
The latter matches up with previous reports, and according to Xbox World it's one reason PS4's looking like it might outperform 360's successor in the processing department.
With its next console Microsoft is looking to focus on "utility and innovation," the report says.
The latest rumour reports arrive hours after MCV's claims that both PS4 and Xbox 720 will be shown at this year's E3.
According to the trade mag, Sony and Microsoft have both indicated to third-parties that they'll be showing off their next-generation machines at the Los Angeles show, spoiling Nintendo's Wii U re-reveal in the process.

Yeah, I believe that. I think MS will focus more on social networking, multimedia and Kinect while Sony will put more focus on amazing core games. Next gen will repeat this gen with the Playstation hardware being more powerful imo.

This. I think both companies have shown what their philosophies are, and I don't see that changing. 720 will be your all in one tv box, streaming media, kinect games and predominantly 3rd party games. PS4 will be the core gaming machine, housing games from Sonys 1st party army with Vita and Move intergration.

It would only matter if it is significantly more powerful. Just "a bit" is pretty much the same as this gen, meaning the same outcome: third party studios drag the PS4 version down to Nextbox's level, and in many cases making an inferior product due to bad ports. If the Nextbox does indeed release first expect a copy/paste of this gen, which is exactly what MS want.

1 unknown is better than the other unknown.
I think Mr Pilkington will arrive shortly.

I guess we will have to wait and see. I see both consoles bringing a great core experience with the improved specs. I do see xbox 360 leading the way into next gen.

Will be interesting to see how this plays out, I'm not gonna put my faith on a rumor from a Playstation mag though

Rumor: PS4 more powerful than next Xbox
http://www.psu.com/Rumor--PS4s-early...a014030-p0.phpU.K. publication PSM3 has claimed that early tech specs for Sony’s as yet unannounced PlayStation 4 are looking a little meatier than Microsoft’s next-generation effort.
The magazine claims that early signs point to Sony’s new console being “a bit more powerful” than the new Xbox.
Furthermore, the mag also says that Xbox 720 will likely beat PS4 to market, but only by a few months.
Gossip on next-generation platforms has kicked up a notch this week, with MCV reporting earlier today that Sony and Microsoft are gearing up for an E3 reveal for their new machines.
Sony’s remaining tight-lipped on any plans for PS4 however, with Shuhei Yoshida, head of Sony Worldwide Studios, insisting the company is still very much excited by future prospects on PS3.
Source PSM3 Magazine
The consoles are rumored to be revealed at E3 this year.
http://www.psu.com/Rumor--PlayStatio...a014026-p0.phpAccording to MCV, successors to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 are to be unveiled at this year’s E3 expo in June.
The site claims that both Sony and Microsoft are looking to lift the wraps off their next-generation consoles at the Los Angeles bash, potentially stealing much of the limelight from Nintendo's Wii U, which will be out in full force.
Various sources in recent months have pointed to an E3 reveal for the new Xbox console, with a release supposedly due next year.
However, Sony has continually brushed off speculation regarding a new platform, though last year reports claimed that a number of first-party companies had begun working on PS4 software.
Sony has pledged to support PS3 for at least a decade, with the console turning five in the U.S. and Japan last November. It’s also focused on PlayStation Vita, which hit Japan last month and is due out in western regions on February 22.
Stay tuned.

I think the extra power (however little it was) in the ps3 really helped in the final years of the consoles. We have seen truly amazing games from a graphical standpoint. If the rumor is true, then I'm assuming MS was too busy integrating casual features to worry about 'power'.

if sony learn their lesson from ps2 and ps3, and make ps4 more friendly for developers - extra power is absolutely worth it, but if not. we will be in same situation with 3rd party developers

I think it is a fair assessment of MS's advancement. They were the most conservative this gen, it stands to reason they might go a little overboard on the nextbox. Or they might keep tried and true and just release more power under the hood and not try to reinvent the wheel.
Who knows?
Like this article, this is all a guessing game

Last year was too early, and in Sony's case they had Vita stuff to take care of. Also, the reveal last year was a bit of a disaster for Nintendo as they didnt really know what was going on either
The Wii-U is meant to focus more towards hardcore gamers and 3rd partys, which is what Sony and MS both had (majority-wise) all to themselves this gen
Revealing or teasing this year could make potential Wii-U owners consider waiting out for the next Sony/MS console, hence why either company may feel slightly forced to show something
Indeed, that's why I was asking if he knew anything more than we already do
