Interactive Ant Farm: Exploring XCOM’s HQ
Little kids will watch wandering bugs with an intensity most of us only display during an online deathmatch. Firaxis wanted to recapture that childlike sense of wonder and fascination with the HQ management portions of XCOM: Enemy Unknown. This is why the studio has dubbed XCOM’s new headquarters the “ant farm.” Players will be able to watch their scientists and field officers wander XCOM’s halls as they go about their daily lives. But the ant farm has a practical purpose as well: this is where players will upgrade their tech and equip their field units before battle. Welcome to the XCOM facilities.

It should be noted that this is far from an exhaustive list of every room you will be able to construct in the final game. Every game starts with a Hanger, a Mission Control room, a Situation Room, an Armory, and a Barrack, but you will be able to customize your base as you expand, adding rooms that augment XCOM’s ability to combat the alien menace.

Satellite Uplink Facility (Not Pictured): The Satellite Uplink Facility allows XCOM to monitor the airspace over different countries around the world. Building multiple uplinks next to each other increases the number of satellites that XCOM can maintain.
    Launch Interactive Ant Farm
I really hope they change the way you see your base before the game is released.

The music during the chase sequences blew my brother and me away when we first bought this for our Amiga CD32. I hope the atmosphere is recaptured in this new iteration. Really looking forward to this

I like the look of the grey aliens. That's goes for the entire game, actually. It's very colorful, judging from what we've been shown so far.

This is how Syndicate should have been done. $#@!in' idiots Starbreeze -_-. Well at least XCOM is getting the re-imagining it deserves.

Well, I love how the ant-farm base looks. It's really immersive but still you have a clear view of what your base contains and stuff.

What exactly did he mean was changed with the time units? Sounded like the original when he explained it. Maybe they mean that every soldier have the same amount of tu's regardless what they are carrying etc?

And god, I hope we can turn of the glam-cam. It's going to annoy the hell out of me after a couple of missions. (It was the same thing with the cinematic battle camera in HOMM5, if someone played that. Cool for 15 mins then just distracting.)
The game seems to turn out great and I'm definitely going to get it the moment it's out! Woo nostalgia!

XCOM: EU is the Alien Invasion Youíve Been Waiting For

Who knew that after all of these years that it would be Firaxis quietly infiltrating the minds, hearts and souls of PAX East 2012 attendees. Not only are they rolling out the most comprehensive (and exciting) expansion to Civilization V (Gods and Kings), but they have jumpstarted a series near and dear to the hearts of so many old guys like me. 2K Games couldnít have made a smarter decision than bringing on Sid Meierís team to bring XCOM: Enemy Unknown to life.

For those of you that havenít played the original, XCOM is the story of an Earth under siege by hostile alien forces. Itís a complete re-imagining that is equal parts strategy and turn-based tactics. Humans are being abducted and itís up to you, leading the elite XCOM team, to push back the threat and take the fight to the invaders.

Strategy aspects are back in full force.

The developer walkthrough we were shown started on the ground, with a team of four XCOM operators in and around a gas station. Before you ask, yes, stuff blew up. The team was comprised of a support unit, a heavy weapons specialist with a rocket launcher and LMG, an assault soldier with a shotgun and a sniper with a knack for finding higher ground.

The game is not at all grid-based, and while the PC versionís UI is being created by a separate team of Firaxis gurus (itís also coming to PS3 and Xbox 360), the man at the controls was using a wired 360 controller. It seemed very easy to select a unit, drag the movement line to cover, ladders and more, and then, if there was still room in the action pool, to use a skill or attack.

One of the things that separates XCOM from other tactical games is that your units donít simply move, act and then wait. They are constantly engaged in the fight. For instance, when the heavy was laying down suppressive fire, pinning an enemy Sectoid (updated, but still recognizable) such that he (she? it?) couldnít move during its next turn, the fire kept coming. You wonít forget what your troops are up to. As he was firing at the Sectoid, the poor car in the line of fire was getting shot up with windows blown out as the brass piled up on the ground. The alien was visibly flinching at the close fire.

Next, the sniper grappled up to the roof and positioned for a better shot. At the same time, the assault troop tossed a grenade at the pinned Sectoid who, thanks to suppressive fire, had no choice but to watch as his death neared.

When the aliens were up, one Sectoid ran inside and, through a mind meld, buffed another one. Alone they arenít challenging, but when theyíve combined their might, beware. Another went into overwatch mode. This sacrifices movement, but allows the unit to fire at anything that crosses line of sight. This happens in slow motion, with great cinematic flare. Unlike some other tactical games, the zooms and angles give a greater sense of urgency on the battlefield.

This is one guy you don't want to meet in a back alley.

In addition to the Sectoids, we got a look at Mutons (also returning) and the new Berserker aliens. Those guys are best dealt with from a distance. We witnessed the support officer get pounded into a bloody paste and, by the way, he wasnít getting up. Ever. Permadeath is something you will need to contend with in XCOM: Enemy Unknown. To wrap up the mission, the assault officer climbed up to roof and used her ďRun and GunĒ ability to clear out one of the Mutons.

The heavy blew out the front of the building with his rocket launcher, taking out the face of the structure and that Berserker. Finally, the sniper picked off the last Muton. The after-action report indicated that resources had been recovered that play into the research aspect of the game.

One thing I loved is that, it seems, that all units are fragile. If this bears out in the final game, it will be focused more on flanking and smart team strategy than hope and prayer about surviving an attack because of a huge life bar.

We had a look at the XCOM base, which resembles an ant farm. You see a cross-section of the base, with different rooms for scientific research, engineering, medical and more. Youíll have to make hard choices. There is limited time for research and finite resources for producing weapon upgrades.

More hype is required! Can't believe... actually I can but a game that's got me the most excited for a long time is a remake of an old classic... I WANT IT NOWZ!
if I am in the PS3 or 360 section I will NOT post about the competitor just to please people, if you want to know what I think about the competitor link me to a thread in the appropriate section

2K’s released a brand new dev diary for XCOM: Enemy Unknown. In the video, lead programmer Casey O’Toole explains how developer Firaxis has had to bring the game up to scratch in modern times compared to the release of the original and his experiences with the old Enemy Unknown.

Get it below. Enemy Unknown launches this fall for PS3, 360 and PC. Watch for a lot more on EU next week.

I'm really looking forward to playing this game.
