Now I know SOPA and PIPA are trending, and they still are way more important for this bit of news, but it's also a sad day for Star Wars fans.

The 67-year-old director, about to release a $58 million self-financed film about black US pilots in the World War II, told theNew York Timesthat he had become disillusioned with the Hollywood film industry."I'm retiring. I'm moving away from the business, from the company, from all this kind of stuff," Lucas said in an interview to be published when his new film Red Tailspremiers in the US this Friday.PHOTOS: George Lucas's hits and missesThe billionaire movie mogul told the newspaper he had to battle to get studio executives to see his film leading him to observe his reputation counted for nothing."Isn't their job at least to see movies? It's not like some Sundance kid coming in there and saying, 'I've got this little movie — would you see it?'""If Steven (Spielberg) or I or Jim Cameron or Bob Zemeckis comes in there, and they say, 'We don’t even want to bother to see it. . . .'"The director said he was told constantly by Hollywood heavyweights that they didn't know how to market his new film and it could alienate viewers."You're doing it as a throwback movie? You're not going to do it as a hip, happening-now, music video kind of movie?," Lucas said imitating a studio executive."And you're going to be very patriotic — you're making a black movie that's patriotic?"In the end Lucas was forced to foot the film's $58 million bill himself. The Star Wars creator says he will not abandon film-making altogether but will make the movies that he wants, rather than what the studios dictate.Lucas shot to fame in 1977 with the release of the originalStar Wars.He controversially chose to forgo the majority of profits from ticket sales in exchange for exclusive rights over the film's merchandise, a move that made him a billionaire and revolutionised the industry.
But this is also a good day for young filmmakers who want to make Star Wars movies from the extremely vast and large universe of books and comics that have been published over almost 3 decades. This news made me want to finish up my Shadows of the Empire treatment. I really want to turn that into a movie one day.
He's not completely going away from filmmaking, but whatever he does will be independent, which I'm sure gives you pro-indie enthusiasts a boner. But anyway, discuss!

I saw George on AOTS last week and he revealed that "Red Tails" is only one of a trilogy. I shit you not, he has a prequel and sequel ready to go. His reason is that this one is actually the "worst" of the three and if it does well he'll green light the others.

Some of the best movies are self funded, I hope this movie does relly well to open up some of the racist hate still in America.
If someone as talanted as George cant get support because his movie has a black patriotic hero then we dont need the industry.

about time red tails looks awful.

Let's be honest: You sleep with anything that walks on two legs. Sometimes, you're not even that discriminating

Tis sad, but at least he will stop fucking around with the old star wars movies. No dis-respect, but everytime he gets his hands on the old ones, he changes something up.

Thought he retired 30yrs ago??

Or did he just lose his mind after ROTJ in 83?

George basically lost his talent after his third movie. I don't know how true or not the story with the executives is, but between the Star Wars prequel trilogy and Krystal Skull Lucas would pretty much have to pay me to screen one of his movies too.
He needs to make a new damn franchise, or at least ONE movie that isn't based on the only shit he's created... problem is, he has no imagination left.
And this is not the first Black patriotic movie out there, so it's not like this is anything new. I feel bad for the story the movie is based on because according to reviews it doesn't do it justice.
"Despite a worthy fact-based story and obvious good intentions, Red Tails suffers from one-dimensional characters, corny dialogue, and heaps of clich?s."
Which is what I was expecting from the trailer.

ROTJ isn't the story, it's that everything after that sucks.
You really think Spielberg needs more money?I think that's cause he just wants a quick buck
and there's nothing with that.
He's been quoted in saying he wants Bay back if anymore 'formers movies are made. That he's the only one who can do it (well).
Agreed, I enjoyed movies like The Tree of Life and The Artist... But a bad movie is a bad movie.
Hah... I need to look that up.BTW, when this movie is marketed during an NBA game, they make it like a hip music video and play dub-step in the background. lol

LOL, yeah I noticed the dubstep spot when I was uploading pics on photobucket
. Besides, isn't Red Tails just part two to Pearl Harbour? If it was made around that time, I think it would have done better.
Didn't say need, he just wants more money. What do people with power want? More power...so he just wants more green and Transformers is an easy way because it's dumb humor and Jar Jar Binks type robots from the 2nd and 3rd movies. Actually Spielberg is pretty smart for signing on as exec even though his name is slapped on it.You really think Spielberg needs more money?
Must be the action scenes. He's been quoted in saying he wants Bay back if anymore 'formers movies are made. That he's the only one who can do it (well).Last edited by DreDayDetox; 01-21-2012 at 02:02.
