To give you an idea.. Kratos in GoW3 used 20,000 polygons.
P.S.: So much for that rumor about one of the big 3 "bowing out" this generation being Sony. Time to look elsewhere. lol

With all the amazing stuff we've seen on PS3 I have no doubt that the PS4 will be a graphical beast.

Wow. That's interesting. I'm very interested to see what things look like in the next generation. Graphics can obviously be improved, but it doesn't seem like there is that much room to grow.
Thanks for posting. Food for thought.SchaffinOSX

Anyone who knows anything about game-technology can say they are not talking about in-game entities know as "game play characters". That is just a waste of resources. 1000$ bet that they are just talking of high-res models that are scaled down for actual game engine.
For that matter: EPIC had Gears of War character models up to several million polygons, but naturally those are scaled down for game engine.
Think about next console having Radeon 7970 Crossfire overclocked and 22nm Ivy Bridge Okta-core @ 5GHz... still would one million polygons for one game entity be waste of resources.

Millions of polys is not a waste with tessellation. Crysis 2 abused tessellation for the sake of making it a benchmark and yet the demand is not that bad.

Its seems to be just a job listing. It didn't specify if it's next gen or not. It's very misleading.
Edit: misread that: Looks like they may starting something new for next gen.Last edited by Sub-stance1; 01-21-2012 at 20:55.

The interesting thing is that the term "next gen" can still refer to our current generation be as it may.

Well the Last of Us trailer Naughty Dog put out had 1 million poly characters used. High poly models have been made since the PS2 era. It doesn't always strictly mean for in-game use as is. So there may be the possibility that this is still just for the current generation.

As was mentioned before. Tesselation bumps up poly counts significantly on character designs. PS3 does not have a tesselator.
As for this being for a current gen game.. Last of Us is a bit far in production to be scouting character model creators amirite? Guys, the WiiU is launching soon enough. This isn't "next gen" anymore. It is current gen, and it is in its downward slope at that.

Lefein~
It doesn't matter that it isn't the "next generation" anymore. What matters is that the term is still used to describe the current gen if seen fit.私は日本語がわかります。図書館で読みます。ビール飲みます。

Exactly... +rep
As Lef said also, LoU is way too far into production (2yrs) to be listing for a character sculptor. This is just another position that they already have plenty of I'm sure. 1mil+ poly models already exist and have been scaled back to meet the engine demands. Nothing impressive about the content in the OP, and it certainly doesn't say anything about the PS4 (since we already have a thread that there isn't a PS4 lol).

I make 3D scenes with poly's of upwards in the region of 8m polys, my PC starts to struggle to hell and back unless I start using layers to hide objects, and this is on an optimised application 3D engine (games can't even compare), if I struggle with that I highly doubt they'll have 200m+ polys per scene in a couple years time, maybe pushing 20m at most - and that's being very generous.

The job is clearly for a future PS4 title, who the hell is still referring to ps3/360 as the "next generation"? Someone stuck in 2005-2008?
