I agree with mostly everyone in this thread, play FFIX then FVIII or vice versa. Final Fantasy VIII is very good, but it may take a while before you fully understand the junction system. Once you understand the junction system and using GFs effectively, most of the game should be a breeze.

I also agree that Final Fantasy VII is the BEST and there are just so many reasons why. However, I must say Chrono Trigger > FFVII.

Hmmmm... I hope it translates to this: If you liked something as crappy as XIII you'd definitely like something as legendary as VII.
And really hope it doesn't imply that there are any similarities between the two games.

Sorry for derailing the thread, a small question though. Which of the following versions of Chrono Trigger do you advise first-time players? 3DS or the downloadable PSN, or the one packed with FFIV, Final Fantasy Chronicles.

Well I beat Chrono on SNES rom. So can't really say. As for 13, yes it isn't the traditional approach but regardless the game did get difficult towards the very end. You can't mindless hit auto battle and win the game as some suggest. I for one thought that paradigm shifting took some skill and thought. Otherwise you would die right there on the spot. I believe if they would have given the option to turn off retry and post battle full heal not so many people would have downplayed it as bad. Just my thoughts. Thing I never understood was that so many people gave 13 flak but not 12. 12 was drastically different and not many ever mention it.

I'm about 2 1/2 hours into 7 right now and will say it is very very slow. I'm hoping it picks up soon. Although I am enjoying it very much.

Chrono Trigger on PSN is the same as the one in Chronicles, and yeah I'd get that instead of the DS version for your first time. The PS1 version is the same as the SNES version.

People don't complain about FFXIII because it's different. We complain because we think it's a poorly executed game. FFXII on the other hand was a well-executed game, albeit with a few flaws. In my opinion of course.

What's the biggest issues you had with it? Just asking because I loved it and I'm not a huge FF fan...yet. Some I'm kind of an outsider looking in. I know one of the biggest complaints I saw was the linear factor to it. Which I can easily see pissed people off. Dragon Age 2 lost me because of this.

PS. No worries about derailing. My problem was solved. Been playing VII all day! Really starting to get into it. Just got past the pillar part.

-Poor story (corny dialogue, no clear objective, no plot progression until the end of Chapter 9, not enough world development, too much dependence on the Data-log)
-Repetitive, one-dimensional gameplay (95% of the game consists of battles).

That's basically what it comes down to. There are some other minor flaws, specifically regarding the battle-system, but that's not substantial.

So I did like the battle-system, as well as the audiovisual aspects, but that's about it. Not enough to carry the game for me. Especially a 45 hour game.

Well, I can perhaps see how it could be done without a guide if it's your first playthrough and first JRPG. It would add a heck of a lot more to your playtime I'm guessing though, but it's possible. Just of note, for my first Elder Scrolls title (Oblivion) I used a guide because I didn't want to miss anything, but I'm playing Skyrim right now and I'm not using a guide, having an understanding of how the series is structured.

Currently playing? Skyrim (360). White Knight Chronicles (PS3). Majoras Mask (Wii). Final Fanasy VII (PS2). Just completed? Final Fantasy VI.

I agree, play the PS1 version. I played the SNES and it had some hard parts, but I loved it. I just hated the ending I got.

FFVI's story was told well, but I honestly don't think it was that great. I don't really like when the villain ends up becoming a madman that only wants power to have power. Contrast to VII, and in this discussion, XIII, the villain actually had a true purpose with their own goals for that there were doing. Kefka, while complex and insane was just a dick and only wanted power. It ended up that the characters fell into a "well, someone has to stop him.

There was more substance in FFVI's side quests than the main story line.

Don't get me wrong, this doesn't make it bad. I'm only comparing it to other final fantasy games I enjoy.

I'm rather surprised how everyone is recommending the PS1 version. I really thought people would favor the DS version giving the additions and fixes in the game.

The Chrono games were only in Japan/US, just like FF Tactics and Parasite Eve 1 were.
