Microsoft: “We won” 2011 in Australia, not Sony

Microsoft has issued its own response to the NPD Group Australia’s 2011 report, highlighting data in opposition to Sony’s claim to have won the year.

“It’s clear to see that the momentum in this industry is with Microsoft and the Xbox platform. We won at the telling Christmas period, we are standalone in our growth this year and looking at the past five years our consistency is unprecedented,” consumer channels group director David McLean said.
Microsoft said the Xbox 360 was the only platform to show growth in the Australian market, boasting a 5% increase in revenue across software, hardware and peripherals; Sony’s growth claim related to PlayStation 3 consoles only.
2011 marked the Xbox 360′s fifth consecutive year of growth of console sales and platform revenue, and is apparently the only console to do so.
The Xbox 360 was to top-selling consoles over the holiday sales period, and the platform had its most successful month to date during December 2011, and subscriptions for Xbox LIVE grew nearly 40%.

PR is amazing. MS claims it won in Australia when you combine Xbox 360 hardware, software and accessories. Sony was talking only consoles. Just like when Sony claims greatness in numbers when they state Playstation Brand (including PS3, PS2, PSP).

MS and Sony look for any little loophole to make their product sound better than the other.

It's funny that in this day in age people can steal as long as they have a reason too. Even if that reason is created by the thieves themselves.

Call of Duty on PS3 outsold Call of Duty on 360 in Australia in 2011. I think Sony won

I disagree with the criticism being shown for both companies here.

That being said, the first comment here is accurate lol:
Australia is an insignificant market for gaming, anyway…
There are probably more gamers in Leeds.
    Too funny.

Being Australian, I find that incredibly... accurate.

Was thinking this when I first saw the thread, winning Australia is like owning the greatest gear for all characters 10x in wow, Sure you're beating other wow players but you're still a loser
if I am in the PS3 or 360 section I will NOT post about the competitor just to please people, if you want to know what I think about the competitor link me to a thread in the appropriate section

I believe sales figures for Australia are like under 5k consoles sold per week.

The number isn't overly significant, but seems like its still worthy to brag over

Even if Microsoft has to twist the figures to win? lol.
PS3 is at 1.5million, Microsoft should cough up their figure.

Well, the 360 was at 1 million almost 2 years ago:

Neither company has acutally issued hard sales numbers, rather talking percentages over what they did last year.
    Whoop de doo.

Well, considering the ridiculous prices we pay for a game $87US, you probably did more than enough just buying one game.

Not an opinion but proven fact that has been widely acknowledged by gaming news sites, etc. But anyway, no problem. Back to the real topic.

    Sounds good

BTW, here is a list of games coming out for the Xbox 360 for the next year retail, from Gamestop. This doesn't include Indie titles or XBLA titles, titles without release dates and unannounced titles.

    Major League Baseball 2K12
    Test Drive: Ferrari Racing Legends
    Silent Hill HD Collection
    Ridge Racer Unbounded

    Men In Black III
    Dragon's Dogma
    Damage Inc. Pacific Squadron WWII
    Inversion
    The Amazing Spider-Man
    Anarchy Reigns
    NCAA Football 2013
    Bioshock Infinite
LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes
    Lollipop Chainsaw
    Madden NFL 2013
    Borderlands 2
    XCOM: Enemy Unknown
    XCOM10
    Resident Evil 6
    Tomb Raider
    Tekken Tag Tournament
    Darksiders II
    South Park: The Game
    Transformers: Fall of Cybertron
    Metro: Last Light
    Rainbow Six: Patriots
    Metal Gear Rising Revengeance
    Halo 4
    Dishonored
    Hitman: Absolution
    Aliens: Colonial Marines

That is a 71:2 ratio of core vs. casual at retail (give or take a couple dupes for special edition core) for the next year based on Gamestops release page found here:

    http://www.gamestop.com/gs/landing/coming-soon/ filtered to Xbox 360.

So, it is in MY research and MY math, I clearly see that the Xbox 360 console is indeed focused on CORE titles in comparison to CASUAL titles. I see the core games EXPANDING, but I also see the casual games expanding (well they did in 2011).

Microsoft Studio, as a publisher/developer might be focused on more casual titles than core titles in their particular line up, it is clear that Microsoft is working with 2nd and 3rd party developers and publishers too keep the onslaught of core titles coming to us gamers. IMO of course.

I thought you were going to drop it but ok. First off let me clarify that I never said that there were no core games on the 360. I said MS as far as internal development goes is focusing mainly on the casual while relying mostly on 3rd party developers to supply the core games and your list just proved that. I personally would like to see more core exclusives and new core exclusive ips from MS. Otherwise if its going to be mostly multiplatform games then I might as well play them on Sony's console with free online plus have a huge selection of Sony's first party games. IMO of course.
