Crytek post a job description for the next xbox system project Ryse that one of the qualifications were experience in tablet type hardware....rumor may be true.As the current generation comes to a close, rumors of what is to come from the next-generation begin to spring forth. Nintendo will launch their next-generation console, Wii U, before the end of the 2012 calendar year & likely durin the holiday season according to Nintendo’s Satoru Iwata, but Microsoft & Sony haven’t been quite as vocal concerning their plans for their next-generation systems.
However, today a rumor has surfaced that Microsoft may be looking to implement a tablet controller, similar to Nintendo Wii U's tablet controller, for the next Xbox. In the latest issue of Xbox World Magazine they have a rumor stating that their sources have told them that Microsoft is experimenting with a tablet controller shaped like Sony’s Vita with an HD screen complete with traditional 360 buttons and sticks -- find a scan of the story here. They also say the next Xbox will be at E3 in June.

why would they want to have tablets? Surely it would go against the idea behind Kinect where you don't need a 'controller' ?

The only way i'd want a tablet interface with a controller was if, and this is a big if (IF), the controller resembled the pad the Dreamcast had. Now that i'd accept with open arms!
All this talk about tablet controllers makes me think how expensive they want those controllers to be!I Like Games.

Unfortunately so, it was an absolute beast of a machine that gave me some brilliant experiences (Chu Chu Rocket, Sonic Adventure 2 and Shenmu 2) and for its time the graphics within it were astounding.
I'd love for Sega to get back into the console business again. Such a shame.I Like Games.

Hmmm, interesting. If they do this it should be something like the Vita, small, easy to hold with all the buttons plus touch screen. A WiiU type controller makes no sense to me for any of the consoles, its big, clunky and awkward.

I hope and assume if they did go for this, it would be an extra if you wanted it. There better be a traditional controller, or I too would pass.

Calm down people. I'm sure we will still have the traditional controls. Right now its just a rumor.

If MS and Sony took this approach the next gen, that will start my days as a hardcore PC gamer.

Worst idea ever. I don't like the wii-u's tablet controller and i won't like any other company releasing a similar one.
It's funny that in this day in age people can steal as long as they have a reason too. Even if that reason is created by the thieves themselves.

It would need to be compact. The Wii U's controller is huge...

If this is true, MS is clearly trying to shove "innovation" down consumers throats whether they want it or not. Don't forget who made you a gaming giant MS. Respect the hardcore audience's needs.
Chances are though that it will be optional or not at all.

Seems like too much effort, Microsoft could easily release a PC like box and capture the core market in an instant. Perhaps that larger casual crowd is what they want now?

If they change the controller paradigm, you'd think it would be something that would accentuate Kinnect since that's where their bread is buttered, like a 2 part controller that was easily picked up by kinect 2.0 and had sticks and what not so you could actually control it instead of jumping and leaning - so basically move but geared towards doing everything kinect excels at

These rumours need to stop. They're coming so thick and fast that people are clearly just starting to make shit up.
Though, I hear there's a rumour the next-box will make toasted cheese whilst you game. Will dispense coffee, too.
