Unreal Engine 4 to be seen 'later this year,' says Mark Rein

Epic's Mark Rein did some hit-and-run teasing at DICE last week, telling G4 that "people are going to be shocked later this year when they see Unreal Engine 4 and how much more profound an effect it will have." We've heard before that Epic is working hard on Unreal Engine 4, and while Epic doesn't expect to see games running on the engine until 2014, it makes a lot of sense that Rein would want to show it off, especially if we also see some next-gen console reveals later on this year.
Considering the fact that The Samaritan tech demo was running on an updated version of Unreal Engine 3, I would be interested to know the visual fidelity of the next Unreal engine.

I don't know why I have never been a fan of the Unreal engine sure it really does take graphics to the next level on the eye but for me every game I have seen use it seems to have the dark depressing GEARS OF WAR look to it or it could be that when I actually got round to seeing Unreal Tournament 3 it just looked exactly like GEARS only with a whiter version of MARCUS and Cole lookalike that had with war paint ????

Why not judge Unreal Engine off of their more recent work like Arkham Asylum, Mass Effect 3, and Gears 3? While Epic came blasting into the current generation with their engine, they still needed a lot of work done to the rendering and colors, but that has been fixed now. And don't think of the Samaritan demo as a judge for Unreal Engine 4 either as it was created independent of the engine build we have seen thus far in games. Best way to think of UE4 is the combination of Samaritan's technical fidelity and the beauty of GoW3/ME3.

I hope they are not afraid to use this engine for the PC.

A few PC exclusive titles that take advantage of the engine would be great!

I'm quite curious to see what it'll look like. Always interested in the next stage of visual fidelity. Especially when it can be applied to a game.

I've never really understood the hate for this engine. The engine itself has nothing to do with how a game looks artistically.

Both games use the same engine.

If a game has a greyish palette, it's because the dev wanted it to.

Most unreal 3 games looked similar int he early days elike Gears or unreal tourneyitself.

Aslot of the games have a hazey blurry skybox.

Except the lightmapper in all games that looked different to other early UE3 games was middleware capable to full GI calculation. (Beast)
It was very hard to get good day time results with the original engine even if your art would have needed it.
Now that lightmass and other improvements have been released the problem is gone.

UE4 should be quite different from UE3 in many ways and I belive that samatarian is not really a good target for the quality we will be seeing.
It's not just how much you use the power, but how you use it.

Considering the rumors circulating, UE3 will be ancient when compared to UE4 and it's tech..
If they did what they were set to, we have a game changer.
