For a gaming device and what is basically version 1 of the firmware it's pretty good. We can only hope they listen to the complaints/suggestions and improve it from here on out. Early Android was a piece of trash, so at least Sony has a good base to go on from here (though, we don't know if they will -_-)
As for games. I haven't played Escape Plan but I've heard a lot of good things about it. Regarding Modnation, I would recommend downloading the demo and giving it a try. Although the graphics are sweet and the game is generally quite fun, for a kart racer, it suffers from low FPS which dulls the entire experience down for me
For your $50 I would recommend WipEout and a PSN game such as Escape Plan or Super stardust delta

I'm disappointed in OLED technology...at least in pitch black dark.

My experience has been exceptional so far... what problem have you had in dark?

Is that a transition screen, or is there something actually being done on the vita at that point? I saw the blotches last night in the dark, but I've never seen it while I'm using the vita if that makes cents. (yes i did that on purpose hehe)

Maybe i'm not looking hard enough but my screen is perfectly black in a pitch black room.

No, mick, it's when there isn't anything being displayed on the framebuffer. I'll try and get a video or something of it later.

I noticed it and thought it was my screen protector. Big blotches all over the screen.

I was just looking at a pitch black picture in a dark room.

it's not a pitch black picutre... lol. It's when there isn't anything on the screen at all, no black pictures, etc., and it's just a powered oled. It's a characteristic of the screen, there's no way that your PSV doesn't "have it".

the puzzle slider on welcome park is shit, doesn't feel like it responds to the touch screen very well. oh and not being able to turn off standby is a nuisance when it comes to mini games on super stardust when your just using the motion sensor to control everything.
apart from that it's all cool beans

I wasn't aware of any way to get it for free and ended up paying for. Will be gutted if it turns out I could've got it for free as I also have the ps3 version

Agreed! I fucking hate that one - Need to get back to it though and get the trophies -_-
I've found a couple for hustle kings. Got them both quite early. How do these gifts even come about?
~If someone in your vacinity plays a game, say Hustle Kings, and you track said person through Near - the gift is yours?
Also, gifts seem to have an expiry date? Near is so confusing now lol
If you purchase WipEout 2048 for the Vita and you also own WipEout HD/Fury on the PS3 - you will be entitled to free DLC for 2048, which basically includes the content from HD/Fury to use on the Vita
So yeah, an aspect of the game is free if you own HD/Fury. But you still need 2048

The only things that have disappointed me so far are;
1. Price of memory card and the fact that it's likely I'll need a lot more memory than first thought
2. Inability to tether my mobile using joikuspot app
3. Size of mains power transformer (iPad will charge with just the plug, why does the vita need such a chunky adapter?)
Apart from these I'm very pleased with it.

My smartphone tethers to my Vita without a problem
The Vita's battery probably requires such an adaptar to power it. The next iterations will proabably not have them
