Assassin's Creed III creative lead, Alex Hutchinson, talks about Desmond:
via The Verge. At a Ubisoft press event yesterday, Assassin's Creed 3 creative lead Alex Hutchinson described the story of the franchise's modern-day protagonist, Desmond Miles, as a wrapper. A wrapper, he said, that ultimately needs to end.
"It's more like The Twilight Zone. There's always a guy introducing it and he's there every episode, but each game completes its own story. Assassin's Creed 1 was Altair's story. Ezio has been and gone. You can engage with these historical stories individually without having to necessarily understand Desmond's story. But yes, we eventually do have to wrap it up."
So what happens to Desmond's wrapper-like narrative?
"I think what you do is you finish it," said Hutchinson. "It's not the only conceit you can use. There's other ways you can frame the experience. I always pitched it to the guys on this game to think of it almost like Star Trek. Each game is a season [...] each big number is a sub-title. We're not changing the universe, but we're being given the reins to the equivalent of [Star Trek:] The Next Generation. Yes, it's the Star Trek universe, and that has certain immutable laws and there's a base kind of tone to it, but within that you can do whatever you want."
Hutchinson said Assassin's Creed 3 is as close to a new IP as you can get, noting the new character, period, story, setting, and mechanics. The only thing that remains, he said, is Desmond.
"Without the Desmond," said Hutchinson, "we could have called it anything else, and people would have said okay. It's just we like the wrapper of being an assassin and being in this continuing war against Templars. There's huge value in that. But [Assassin's Creed 3] is 90% a new game."
Does Hutchinson think Desmond needs to die?
"I think Desmond needs to end," he said. "At some point. You know what I mean? Things that go on too long lack resonance. We're asking people to remember seven years' worth of story. Which is like saying you were in junior high and now you're finishing college. And you need to remember what you were doing in junior high."
Ubisoft has already begun work on a Desmond-free Assassin's Creed. Assassin's Creed 3: Liberation for the PlayStation Vita stars a female assassin not related to Desmond Miles, and will release on the same day as its console sibling.Last edited by Blacksite; 07-20-2012 at 22:01.

Supposedly, the game will get a ton of DLC as well.

So, the game world is larger but it won't be too long of an experience.
via VG247.Assassin’s Creed 3 creative director Alex Hutchison has revealed to VG247 the true scope of the studio’s upcoming open world title, and warned of the dangers of making games too long.
Hutchinson explained, “The game is huge, both in physical size, play time and in the amount of new gameplay we packed in. We stripped out a lot of mechanics and systems from previous games but I think we are still pushing the maximum possible scope.”
But there is always a danger that too much content will stop many players reaching the end Hutchison warns, “There is only so much you can juggle in your mind simultaneously, and only so much variety you can add before it starts to feel random and not cohesive.”
“Also, we have a very high completion rate on the franchise, and if you make it too long you start to lose that, which would be a disaster for a game like ours where we really value the consistency and continuity of the universe.”
Hutchison also explained that the game world of Assassin’s Creed 3 is 1.5 times the size of Rome in Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood.Steam & PlayStation Network: BlacksitePSU | 3DS Friend Code: 1349-4916-2054

Assassins Creed 3 includes 60 minutes of exclusive PS3 gameplay
-
08-07-2012 #342
Interesting:
from the link in the OPThe box art for Assassin’s Creed III has been revealed, showing us that the PS3 version will include 60 minutes of exclusive gameplay.
There are no details as to what this could be, perhaps its special missions, or maybe it’s even a some sort of link up with Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation.
Either way, PS3 fans will be pleased to see that Ubisoft are providing exclusive content for the game, and it’ll no doubt give the PS3 version a boost.

PS3 version is looking mighty tempting now. But I'll have to see which console version looks and/or plays better.

I think I'll get the PS3 version based on this and also their E3 showcase of the game was on PS3 so I'm just guessing that it may be the lead platform on this
This exclusive stuff kinda sucks though.

I think I read somewhere that the PS3 is the lead platform. And I forgot about the E3 showing. It did look really good. So yeah PS3 version for me most likely. Ubisoft has only really been showing mostly PS3 gameplay. Even the walkthrough on Xbox Live is from PS3 as you can see the PS3 button presses and layouts from time to time.
