LOL Such a contrast to what the competition is doing. This is why Sony gets such a loyal following.

Great news indeed. It's nice to see the consoles this gen trying new things with their online service.

Don't we need an Eve Online account first though? and those aren't for free, but there is a 14 days free trial.

Dust 514 going to PC as well?

DUST 514 may be looking at a PC release. It may be a bit thin, but developer CCP’s CEO Hilmar Petursson gave quite the hint when talking about the keyboard and mouse support in the PS3 version at GDC this week. “I wonder why we did that,” he jokingly told Massively.

The game is so far only announced for the Sony system. A 360 version won’t be happening due to the PS3 being a more open platform. More on that here.

The free-to-play MMO is expected to launch this summer.

Thought it was already coming to PC? A game like this for PC is a no brainer I would think.

I've a feeling MS wouldn't allow them. No way they would allow a F2P MMO on their system that relies on ingame purchases to make revenue. That cuts them out of the profits.

No, they are 2 seperate games that work together. One is subscription based while the other makes or hopes to make profits from micro transactions
    BUT
If you want to beable to play the other half of the gameworld you would need to sub to eve online. Then you can play as the guy thats hiring all the Mercs to take over the planets for you too.

Last I heard, They are looking into turning Eve Online onto microtransactions aswell. This may be a way to test the waters so to speak. What I'm worried about is RMT. How will it effect Dust? RMT is B.I.G. buisness in Eve online.

PCs are very much like Air Conditioners.
They both become utterly useless once you start to open up Windows....

I've never played Eve, but this whole concept of the two games is interesting. What is RMT? Anyways it's good to see Sony do this. Hope some good comes of it.

    RMT = Real Money Trade.
Its where you use real money to purchase in-game items and in-game money

So does this apply to all games released from now on? Like CS:GO, Valve removed the cross platform play due to patching issues.

I don't know, but I'd assume all they would have to do is talk to Sony about it like CCP did.

Sounds like a big deal. I think Sony wants to gain up on MS and may be part of they reasons why they're doing this. This sets them apart from MS.

This. Dust 514 and DCUO are just the start. If Sony have taken down parts of the old PSN infrastructure then they have plans. With Guildwars and other MMOs seemingly coming to console, Sony having the ability of cross platform play and choosing the free to play business model is going to totally set them apart from all of the competition.

I was hoping we would see some great collaboration on such an "open" network. The steam integration with Portal 2 hasn't done anything for us, most likely because of the differences in networks. Counterstrike is experiencing similar issues with cross platform and seamless updates, and no longer going to play between PC and PS3.

What I am hoping is that the next gen of console will bring a new more open online that is built with PC cross platform compatability from the start.

Its not to surprising to be honest.

Sony let Square Enix do whatever they wanted with FFXI last gen and for many (myself included) who installed it to their gen 1 BC PS3s playing with PC, PS2, PS3 Mac, Linux AND XBox 360 users in perfect harmony... o_O THAT was true cross platform gaming right there.

They were going to let S/E do the same with XIV had they actually had a "finished" product. God knows that game turned into a ****ing mess.

Free Realms is F2P on the PS, DCUniverse is F2P on the PS
That spy fps/tps wouldve been been F2P had they not pulled a S/E. Whatever happened to that game anyways?
Speculations about Diablo 3 (not mmo but "similar" in away) and Guild Wars 2 possibly making its way to the PS3. I feel like Im missing one.... n no, not Home...

Sony wants MMOs on their consoles. I wish they'd make a new Everquest for the PS3 personally.

I think the cross-platform thing with Counterstrike has more to do with the idea of it, rather than PSN limiting it. Cross platform just won't work with consoles and PC, not unless it's a game that doesn't require competition.

Agree and disagree. Nothing wrong with cross platform competitive play. Its just that competitive games such as online shooters and rts would have jnfair advantages over consoles. Most other genres would work just fine.
