Do older gamers see portable systems as "for kids"?

I have an older brother who is a gamer like me. He's turning the big 30 this year. Anyway, we were talking about games and etc. and I asked him was he getting a PS Vita. He said no, and one reason why he said no was because he said he now believes and sees portable gaming systems as something for kids or younger people. That's his opinion, but I was wondering how do older gamers see the PS Vita and portable gaming systems?

I have a question that is a bit off topic. If you're not traveling a lot or on the go a whole lot, then is it wrong or not a good investment to buy a portable system? I like portable gaming, but I'm just wondering is it good money sense to buy a portable gaming device if you're not on the go all the time. I guess you could say I am questioning portable gaming.

Not really, most older gamers who grew up playing Nintendo/Sega got hooked on the GameBoy at some point.

I never take my PSP anywhere incase I lose/break/damage it, I'm fine playing it at home but if the games were on PS3 (as in it having absolutely no exclusives) I wouldn't bother with one, but it does have a lot of exclusives that I own and can't get on any home system. PSV is kinda different here though because it has some unique functions that the PS3 doesn't have, and so will get unique versions of games that are also on PS3, and probably get more exclusives.

Vita IS a full on console and many of the titles on it will be exclusive to Vita. I think whether you are on the go or not is not the question to ask, but whether you want to experience all the games that will only be out on Vita.

Yep exactly. Plus I play my Vita in the house alot too. Either relaxing across the couch or in bed. And yeah, even Sony themselves said there will be alot of games that will only be on Vita.

Ask him what he'd rather do in the toilet. Stare at the wall, or play a cracking game on something like the Vita or even 3DS. Lol.

No, older people don't see it as a child's toy. I'm around your brothers age.

There are games that cater to a younger audience and games that cater to a more adult audience. Just like any other gaming device.

I believe that's just your brother. A console is a console portable or not. There ought to be games catering to all ages.

Now if it's a good investment if you are not gaming on the go is an other question. And the answer is quite relative.
For example, you got a 3DS, rarely using it out of the house and have finished 3-4 games. Then I got the 3DS mostly so I could game on the long night swifts at work. I still haven't finished Zelda the one of the two games I own.

I play vita at home 99% of the time, it's perfect when the tv is "occupied".

Out of those two? The first scenario and the second scenario is what I think.

I don't know if 25 is necessary older but i used to play game boy and game gear a whole lot and now the psp. Thinking about getting a vita. My uncle (60 years old) loved the psp. He took it from my cousin and never gave it back. I showed him the Vita and now really wants to get one. Your never too old to be a gamer whether it be portable or home console

I'd say no. Portable gaming systems are seen more used by kids, but are aimed at both old and young.

From my experience older non-gamers do, yeah. But older games not so much

    Saw some dude yesterday standing up fully suited waiting for the train on the platform playing on his naked Vita. Must've been like 35 lol. I couldn't imagine playing it standing up, what if it drops on the concrete ;_;

You need a wrist strap up in that bitch! At first I thought it was stupid, then I thought, it's not as stupid as dropping your Vita on the floor!

My personal impression is that the DS is for kids and the PSP is for kids and adults. Though I know plenty of adults that do like their DS.

You could say that portables are aimed at kids (much easier to give a child an all in one system rather than buy them a TV as well as a console) but i don't think that they are the sole market.

I am not into portables what so ever, it even kind of annoys me that the money used to develop a handheld isn't put into the next iteration of home console. But thats just me. I like my gaming experience on my comfy couch, on my 65" plasma.

I did have a game boy brick, growing up, however when I saved up enough for a Mega Drive 2, I think i forgot about portables all together.
Disclaimer: I may or may not know what I'm talking about.

Do some older gamers see portable systems as something for kids to play? Sure. Those people usually don't do enough research into the kind of games being released. Either that or they just don't like the idea of playing games on a small screen. But if you can show me an epic RPG or sandbox exclusive to the PlayStation Vita (not just ported titles from its console counterpart), I'll consider picking one up.

My dad is 47 and actually has his own Nintendo DS, mind you the games he plays are math puzzles and brain age.
