I've been hearing good things from people who play online and multiplayer, how fun it is and stuff. I'm thinking about starting to play online. So would a mic be a good investment? What's a good mic for a good price for PSN?

You should jump online and give it a try. I myself never thought i'd get as hooked as i did to online gaming but it happened. It's just a good change of pace. I love single player gaming and i always will. It's the backbone of the hobby but multiplayer is a fun change of pace if you're competitive like i am.

The PSEye is only good if the camera is closer to you than the TV. In my case the PSEye sits above the TV so I can use move. It makes it unusable since it's much closer to the surround system than me.
The new PS3 Bluetooth headset is awesome. Lighter, smaller and more comfortable.
Other than that personally I find the PS3's "public" chat kind of limited. My solution is to pair this fantastic bluetooth headset with my phone and just call the other person.

My advice is to start playing online to see if it's something you enjoy enough to warrant buying equipment for.
If it is, I'd recommend either the Turtle Beach PX21 (wired) or official Sony headphones (wireless, Bluetooth I believe).
Obligatory TapaTalk signature.

I would STRONGLY recommend the official Sony 7.1 headset AFTER you have spent enough trial time to see if online game play is for you.

Don't get too disheartened when your ass is being handed to you initially. Like most things, practice makes perfect
I never use the mic, not on PS3 or Xb or anything and I usually do quite well. I wouldn't say it's vital to the experience but if you're playing with friends it can enhance the experience, that's for sure

The PSN is free, provided you have an internet connection I see no harm in it.

That's usually the only genre I play online and it's so addicting! I was totally hooked on Battlefield 3 when it came out, most people work in a team which is what you need on that game really.
With the headset I only use that when I've got mates playing with me, otherwise I don't usually bother.
