They're really starting to clean house. Reconstructing is what they need.

The way they're doing thing is not fair for those who been there for 30 years. Putting workers on leave of absence without being called back is one way of not paying severance pay.....very dirty and under handed.

There have been layoffs left right and center in the game industry recently, it's just part and parcel of business.

With Sony outsourcing its production I wont have my usual confidence in their hardware reliability when the PS4 launches.

Actually, even Kraptaku labels this Bashcraft drooling as RUMOR. FFS, who ISN"T outsourcing to China? And when did corporate personnel practices and policies become "gaming news"? There is nothing in that article that doesn't describe what every corporate personnel office does when belt tightening, that is, determine where efficiencies can be better realized by "rightsizing". The part where the Bashcraft garbage ventures into tabloid rumorism is that medical conditions are accounting for some of the layoffs.
Can't think of a more completely off topic post for old PSU forums than this one.

Gotta do what you gotta do to keep the company moving forward. Can't say China always makes quality stuff but hey it sure is cheap and that's what the people want

Sony has to outsource more, with the yen sky high and an aging workforce with increased needs and costs for medical benefits and not young enough to spend long hours on a factory floor. They are just outsourcing more manufacturing work, as well as the cost of maintaining manufacturing facilities. The design stays in-house. This business model is working very well for Apple and Nvidia.
The really funny part of this outsourcing transformation is China is starting to outsource to Vietnam and India now, with the yuan starting to float upwards and global focus on working conditions resulting in average pay to be increased, increasing manufacturing labor costs.

Keep in mind that even though it's all under the Sony flag, they are all under different areas. Anything PlayStation is usually produced in China while the Bravia tv's are maufactured in Japan, one of the reasons they cost more than they should. They really need to lower prices on their tv's if they want to sell more, Samsung offers better quality tv's for cheaper so why buy Sony

Interesting comment:
I've been reading a lot of articles about Sony in Japanese business magazines (they have them lying around the office for when things aren't too busy--because we are blocked from using the real Internet at work, but I digress).
The conclusion most of them are making is that Howard Stringer completely and utterly f**ked Sony up by bringing in a bunch of high-level "professional" (read: MBA) managers who didn't know the company very well and knew absolutely nothing about the technical aspects.
Every article has a little table that shows how the number of people on the Board of Directors who came from within the company went from 14/15 to 2/15 during Stringer's tenure.
The articles also go on to talk about how much Stringer and his "clique" of outsiders were reimbursed, even as Sony was hemorrhaging money over the past few years.
Basically, what they're trying to say is: this isn't how we do business in Japan and it's not how anyone should do business anywhere.
