Sony “Confident” They’ll Get PS4 Out Before The New Xbox

Sony are aiming to get the follow-up to the PS3 (currently dubbed Orbis, even as just a codename) out before Microsoft get their next console out, sources are claiming.
The report, which says that the PS4 has been in design planning stage for about two years (something we were told on the phone last week) says that Sony are confident “it will have the console at market ahead of the next generation Xbox next Christmas.”
“Sony are completely in the belief that they have the jump on Microsoft this time,” the source said. “You should be watching the timing of next year’s E3 keynotes, and who’s going to go first.”
It’s believed that some publishers (Ubisoft are named, for example) and developers know all about the PS4, or whatever it’s called, whilst others are likely to be briefed over the next few months.

Sony will at least launch at the same time. They stated in an interview (not just some source) that it would be "undesireable" to release later after MS again. I don't know if they will make it first, although, they are in the best position to launch a new console in some ways.

Exactly! Sony did a great job with the Vita launch. Best list of launch titles in gaming history. I bet the PS4 will top the Vita in terms of quality launch titles.

Better to have low hopes and being pleasantly surprised than jumping on the hype train again and being letdown.

EDIT: Seriously though the jump to the next generation is not going to be anywhere near as impressive as the one from PS1 to PS2 or PS2 to PS3. I think we already know what to expect, which sort of robs us of the wow factor.

I disagree that the notion of the jump between this and the next generation wont be that impressive. Even the Samaritan tech demo thats possible to run on one current day GPU looks like a massive jump between the PS360/Now.

That gap is only going to get bigger.

I just hope they release the console the way the really intend too, i.e. complete and they dont release it early, just to win the race with minimal functionality, just to release the rest in a patch later.

By looking at the facts, which make these recent hallucination rumors look ridiculous, Sony is very well prepared to announce the PS4 at TGS 2013 and launch in spring 2014.

Fact 1: The IBM Power7 CPU is two years old. A consolized version with 28nm is very feasible by late 2013. The architecture is very close to Cell, except more like a Super Cell. Game developers are not going to dump all their PowerPC coding to suddenly switch to x86. Sony is not going to cut off their relationship with IBM and suddenly get all chummy with AMD.

Fact 2: Nvidia has just launched Kepler, had a researcher state he is working on two generations past Kepler, essentially verifying Maxwell as in progress. By late next year, Maxwell will be very mature and very feasible for the PS4 to have a consolized mostly-Maxwell GPU.

Fact 3: Blu-ray. The 100GB Blu-ray is almost 2 years old now with 4x. By late next year, it could be 6x.

Sony is all staged on the hardware side to finalize the PS4 by late 2013. There are several in-house studios stating they are working on next-gen titles, which essentially means the launch titles. All the pieces are lining up for a 2014 launch.

Nintendo Wii launched after the 360 and it did just fine. Sony should be focused more on quality and price.

Very sceptical. A race always worries me that a product ends up rushed to market. Invariably leading to consumer complaint.
