Do you pay any money for cell phone apps or do you only download free apps?
Most apps can be gotten for free, but some apps are so great they're worth the little bit of money you pay for them. I've never bought an app for more than $5, and that app is amazing and very useful for me.

Yeah, I prefer to pay for apps. I don't like free apps since I can never figure out their business model and I HATE ads in my apps. I really don't believe in the "get a ton of users and figure out how to make money later" scheme either so...

I buy quite a few iOS apps - in fact, just picked up like 4 new apps (was going to post in the Apple thread...) - which is course are pushed down to both our iPhones and our two iPads, so if you consider they’re “multi-user licenses”, most are a deal.
If an app is good, and there’s a free vs. pay, I generally pay, not only to support the dev, but to avoid limitations or annoyances like ads. I have kind of a price limit with games which is usually $0.99, but on occasion will pick up something more expensive (like Real Racing HD was $2.99), especially for the tiny person. Productivity apps, especially anything that helps me to do business, I’d pay whatever, but there always seems to be great options for $1-$5 is most categories.
Quite a few of my favorite apps: IMDB, DropBox, Netflix, are free (though some have a service fee), and with my iOS devices, I haven’t had to go out and “re-buy” any of the bundled apps because they’re solid OOTB (my previous device I wound up having to purchase Touchdown because the stock 2.2/2.3 mail client was flakey).
Of course I also buy “desktop” apps, but that’s a different thread

I only pay for iPad apps, I won't waste money on cell phone apps because I do not use them enough.

It's perfectly legal to install apps outside the marketplace, sure, but it's not legal to download apps that aren't free lol. Anyways...

All the "unknown sources" checkbox is for is so you can sideload apps that aren't signed on the marketplaces. Doesn't make downloading copyrighted material for free any more legal.

When I had my galaxy s phone I had some freebies, but the ads were kinda annoying.
Here's what I've purchased on my iphone:
Jetpack Joyride
Infinity Blade
Nuts!
Sprinkle
Water?
Zombie GS
Angry Birds
Cut the Rope Experiments
Fruit Ninja
Words with Friends
NinJumpDX
Plants vs Zombies
Garage Band
Tapatalk
RageHD
Zombie Jombie
Angry Birds Space
Zen Pinball
Modern Combat 3
There are more, but that's all I have loaded right now.

alot of apps, such as angry birds space, you can turn your data connection off and the ad's disappear and you can play the game in full screen glory..

Yeah, if an app has a pro / donate version and it's an app that I will use often enough, then I will show my support and purchase it. Last time I saw I had around $80+ worth of apps. Granted some of these apps aren't currently installed, like the multiple launchers, but most still get use. Funny because we used to speculate as to how much power / data was used when retrieving and generating ads, and just recently those "findings" were released. Not surprising to see that so much power goes into the display of ads. Not always about removing ads though, but showing support.

I love free apps, if you dont like the ads disable wifi provided the app doesn't need it.
The most expensive app I have bought is GTA:III shame touch screen controlls are pants for 99% of games.

I pay for apps. I think Logmein Ignition was the most expensive, but I wanted it for work. With the amount of money I paid for the phone and continue to pay for the service, I don't want to limit the experience for a few bucks.

If the app is worth paying for...

I don't really play games, but I could see that working in that instance. More than 3/4ths of the apps I use require data though.
A good point. While not only showing support, I find a lot of these paid apps just end up being the better offering on the market. Maybe not an absolute, but certainly seems the case more often than not. I know a lot of apps have alternatives, many free, but then you get into the territory of missing features and some having less than consistent support. To each his own though, suppose it's better that people search out the free alternatives as opposed to "warez."
