I simply do not like Facebook's business model.
It's not privacy that is the main issue. It is knowing if you are the customer or the consumer. Facebook makes money from ads. In order to capitalize as much as possible they need to know you in order to sell you to ads companies that wants to show you targeted ads. This is not a business model I like, thus I avoid dealing with companies using that model.Other opinions are available.

Facebook is a huge waste of time imo but you can't really hate on them since they've found a way to make tons of money. Never really used/liked instagram much anyway.

As opposed to letting me pay money for your service. This has nothing to do with websites in general, I'm specifically talking about offering a "free" service where the model is to get as much information as possibly and sell it to ad companies. I don't like that business model, even though it is successful, and thus I neglect to use services with that model, such as Facebook and Google.
Web startups typically have two options; Sell you or charge for the service. I'm rooting for a future where charging for a service is sustainable and thus I support those efforts by choosing to do business with companies I can pay.
Even if you block the ads, your data has still been sold.Other opinions are available.

Who cares? Not like you are some secret agent who needs to keep their identity hidden.

how can you be sure sites you "pay" still don't turn around and farm out some general user infographics? Are you saying you only participate in sites that have it written in ToS that they will not allow member information to be sold or farmed?
I know for a fact, even sites that say they don't sell their info, they still get farmed by bots and other intrusions... just seems a little paranoid to actively avoid sites where the information is knowingly sold. Really I am not poking fun or mocking, I just have a little trouble understanding the fears involved.

What if aliens had television shows for every human and you are worried about companies taking information for their use. Man would you look dumb.

As I said, I don't worry about a typical website such a forum or a news website. But I do worry about services that store my data, such as Facebook.
General user info is not an issue, but personal data is.
The fear is being a commodity, that's not something I desire.
I'm not saying my way is the right way, or preaching it, but that's how I do it. As long as people understand whom the customer is they can make their own decision.Last edited by Tutankhamun; 04-09-2012 at 22:15.

but see, that is the problem.
the minute you sign up for ANYTHING, you are now a marketable piece of demographical information.
ISP, bank card, checks, library card, Amazon account, gym membership, etc... all this stuff can be mined for personal information. Nothing damaging, but you will end up on a list somewhere, somehow no matter how careful. So to say "I don't like FB's practices" is a little, pardon the expression, obtuse. It isn't like they are selling your CC info or address... they are listing age, sex, track your activity, things like that. Things that are not useful to anyone but ad servers.
Like I said, all websites do it to some extent to allow for better experiences for their patrons. Even though I don't understand it, I respect your decision to try and keep yourself from being sold. I personally just don't see any point in it.

The primary point of revenue from my ISP (Swedish laws does not allow ISP's to sell my information btw), library (haven't used my library card in years, I buy all my books), gym are not ad based. They make the most of their money from direct point of sale. This is not the case of Facebook. Facebook makes their money from ads, let's be 100% clear about that. There is no other way for them to make money. That isn't a secret or necessarily a bad thing, I, however, choose not participate.
I agree that it isn't useful to anyone in reality, but I do find ads targeted to a person creepy but I'm totally fine with ads targeted at a demographic to me, that difference is everything.Other opinions are available.

That is an incredible sum. In 2006, Google bought YouTube for $1.65 billion, to compare.
