Apparently it's for e-book price fixing. In a nut shell, The publishers wouldn't have competitive retail pricing therefore Apple can raise up the e-book price and a guaranteed 30% commission on each e-book sold.

Lol exactly. They should behave too. Apple is making a killing. Why risk ruining the Apple name trying to pull off stuff like this.

You guys have kind of got it backwards. The publishers want to control the pricing and limit the amount of discount that can be applied. i.e., Amazon selling books _under_ cost (which is also not an approved activity) which means that publishers offering to sell directly can’t be competitive. So they got together with Apple and said, “OK, here’s the price we want you to sell this for, and we’re not allowing anyone else to sell it for less (i.e., Amazon)”

The “agency” model means the publisher “fixes” the price. This is already done by hundreds of companies that don’t allow discounting less than (or within a very small percentage of) their own price.

Is there a benefit for Apple? Sure, the extra direct profit is of course a perk, but the big play here is gaining critical mass as a source for eBooks. If it’s the same price through iBooks, people would be way more inclined to use them vs. price shopping.

The real legal issue is the publishers should not be communicating this intent to Apple, which falls under collusion, they should’ve set up a publishing organization and made it an edict to their suppliers.

No. That has nothing to do with this case. This case is specifically about eBooks.
