Looks like fun actually, I wouldn't mind the boring repetitiveness.

Chinese salaries are a decent example of a market economy in play, there are more workers available than jobs. Add in the factor that working at Foxconn is considered a well paid job in China and you can understand how the employer is in a position of strength. This rings true for all of China, just not for jobs in factories. This is nothing new and I'm a bit surprised people are still not aware of it.

But then again, you family, presumably, does not suffer from extreme poverty. Which is the case most Chinese workers are in.

I’d like to see $14USD/hour normalized into “buying power” in the local economy.

It’s also more than I suspect the average fast food worker makes, and you can’t really equate the resulting product (i.e., a $1 cheeseburger to a $500 phone).

And yet $14 a day will not get them out of poverty. Seems like they are being taken advantage of pretty badly when they think $14 a day is good money. Yet they have a really nice soccer field to play on with a huge LCD screen.

That is what I expected. I only know what I make in a day and I would assume the rest of the world would need to make at least $100 a day to survive.

Yeah, it’s strange when we look at that income vs. our minimal expectations.

There was a thread on another board about Melissa Ethridges’ ex wanting like $23K a month and a few folks were like “I could easily live on 1/4 of that, some said they do fine with $1500 and other said they’d have a notable loss of “lifetyle” with less than $20K.

I guess it’s all in your perspective.

If they were paid tht much it wouldn't be worth sending them the work in the first place, if these devices were made in the USA or UK etc then they would probably cost 2 or 3 times what they cost now due to the increase in labour expenses.

I think your definition of "survival" is quite different than theirs.

Its one thing to survive, another to live comfortably.

Which is why I tend to laugh when the poor in the US complain about being poor. Compared to people in most other developing countries, they are living the good life.

Also most people can only talk about bringing this sort of labor to developed countries and still buying products at the same rate.

But when its time to walk the walk, they can't do it.

Hell most people would balk at what I paid for my Asolo boots, but that's the price of quality boot made by workers (Romania) being compensated decently.

Oh I agree. I am sure there are those in China that would call me rich, where I know I am sooooooo far from it lol. Poor people in the US is pretty much comfortable living in China.

    Crazy ass world..

Kind of related to the money here vs. the same money elsewhere...

A friend of my neighbor, met him once at a party, came into a decent sum of money and he moved to South America. Basically increased his effective buying power by like a factor of 10X, saw pictures of his homestead and it’s like 12K-14Ksq/ft, a couple of full time helpers (cook and cleaner), of course he lives with the constant threat of being attacked by the local drug lord, but otherwise it’s pretty cool

If $14 a day is the difference between you and your family eating or not, you'd take it. And yes, China does not have a well fair program.

Watching this video kind of reminds me of automobile plants because of the assembly line. They really aren't doing anything much different than working at a GM plant for instance, except maybe one requires a little bit more physical strength depending on what you are doing. I remember people with 5th grade educations used to make $30 an hour sorting spark plugs and screwing in a few bolts on a door panel. These people are making $28 per day after a few years. Massive difference. The funny thing is, if I lived with a bunch of friends, I could actually get by pretty decently on $28 a day.

I work in a supermarket and get a casual rate of $22.80 an hour. Id love to say I could live off $14 a day, but in Australia that wouldn't even get you a bus ticket for the week.
