EA: Poor Battlefield 3, Old Republic performance 'result in layoffs'

EA is planning to cut a significant number of jobs, it's been claimed, and 'poor' performance of big budget titles such as Star Wars: The Old Republic and Battlefield 3 are said to be the cause.
Startup Grind reports the cuts were originally scheduled to happen on April 9, although the site claims "they're coming very soon".
According to multiple sources, EA is is planning to layoff between 500 and 1,000 people, which is between 5 - 11% of total company employees.
The site claims Battlefield 3, which it spent $30 million marketing and only generated $13 million from, and Star Wars: The Old Republic, which received similar treatment and has supposedly already seen subscription numbers decline, are big contributing factors to the cuts. The site also points out that EA has had a rocky year so far. It paid a pretty penny for casual game dev PopCap, its chief financial officer Eric Brown left, and it was voted the worst company in America.
    Not nice news, if true.

How much money did BF3 actually make EA?

That sucks, but honestly if Star Wars: The Old Republic was F2P or a single player game I could see myself getting it.

I dont like paying for a game, then having to pay to play the damn thing

Man that's unfortunate. I would have thought that BF3 would have sold a few million copies, it's the best FPS of it's kind and is totally badass.

I'm surprised EA didn't make a profit on Battlefield 3. It just proves that customers do not buy FPS's anymore.

I thought BF3 did good. Guess i was wrong and layoffs always suck. Step your game up and create something unique that'll get people excited.

Didn't they ship 10 million units of Battlefield 3?. How can they not make profit from that?. I'd guess that the game cost around $50 million(Including Marketing), so it should have made something back.

They don't buy Battlefield games any more. CoD and Halo are alive and thriving.
