What do you think about a fourth video game console by Apple?Apple could be getting back into the console game market with a helping hand from Valve, according to a report on Cult of Mac.
Is the console market big enough for Apple, Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo?
The Apple-focused news site followed up reports that Apple CEO Tim Cook visited the Bellevue, Washington headquarters of Valve last week with an explanation for the executive's trip. According to Cult of Mac sources, Apple is preparing a TV set for release later this year that "will come with an Apple-branded, Kinect-like video game console." According to the site, the system will rely on motion and touch controls, possibly through a touch screen remote that will come with the TV.
The news follows rumors of Valve's entry into the hardware market. Last week, the developer posted job listings for an electronics engineer to join its hardware team, which is creating "whole new gaming experiences." The company has also said it is investigating the field of wearable computing and augmented reality.
Neither Apple nor Valve returned requests for comment as of press time.
This would not be Apple's first attempt at cracking the game console space. The company teamed with Bandai in 1995 to launch Pippin, a multimedia console based on the Macintosh operating system that also allowed users to access the Internet. The system flopped, selling just 12,000 units in the US before Bandai pulled the plug on it.

Um, no. What would be the reasoning here... to get this? I doubt they have anything "apple" enough to make it worthwhile. What exclusives would tempt me into buying it? Nah.. can't see it.

I'll stick to the ps3/360. Unless Apple comes up with something very unique and introduces a new experience I'll stick with the guys that know what they're doing. Sony has earned my loyalty with three generations of amazing gaming so it'll be hard to budge me.

It's like mixing gold with poison. I don't see how or why this would happen anyways.

I don't see Apple entering a market they have already disrupted.

I personally don't believe the console market is big enough for Apple, Valve, or even Sega to release a new home console. Why not just focus on releasing quality titles? It's one of the reasons the Sega Dreamcast is such a memorable console.

It'll be $1000 minimum and will sell more than anything in the market.
It's funny that in this day in age people can steal as long as they have a reason too. Even if that reason is created by the thieves themselves.

^This! They'd have some BS justification for it being ~$1400 too.
Just no. Just no. *facepalm*
I'd definitely buy Valve's though. At least they'd have awesome games as opposed to artsy-fartsy hipster games.
Doubt it'd happen. I don't think even Apple themselves and their brainwashing could convince their hispter-fans into playing video games (as in console gaming, not iOS gaming).
Also, I play videogames for the story, for the fun, for the interactive open worlds, and for the simulation; of the various 'core' type games and the experiences they bring to us now.
I don't play video games for the 'perception of cool' that Apple will no doubt try to turn the video games industry into.
I don't want a dumbing down of the industry. You already see that these days in tech, where nigh everything are called "apps".
It's influenced even MS themselves with the new Windows 8, and how it's changed.
Unless Apple embraces gaming for what it is (which I highly doubt), then I want no part of them in the industry.
If this happens, I truly hope MS and Sony team up to make an uber console where the 1st party might and hardware prowess meet MS' online service and marketing and distribution.
That'd be the only way to keep the gaming industry from imploding into dumbed-down 'hip' activity where all we play ar e games like Angry Birds and Fruit Ninja (as good as those games are).
Kinda like how the threat of aliens could conceivable bring humans together.
(you know, big bad evil scary things - if aliens wore fedora hats and dressed like they only shopped out of op shops/second hand clothing stores)

Yes! I'm so, so, SO into buying $250 tech for $1000. Color me VERY excited!

Everyone should know good and well you don't buy the tech, you buy the experience. That "250 fro 1000" stuff is so 28 seconds ago.

No. The rumor started because Tim Cook, Apple's CEO, was spotted at Valve.

For those whom don't know, Apple has a console out already. You need an iOS device, any HDTV and an $99 Apple TV. With AirPlay built into iOS, you can mirror your iOS games onto your TV and you're done.Last edited by Tutankhamun; 04-17-2012 at 09:16. Reason: Damn you autocorrect.

You tech heads will never get it.
Apple's main strength is their ability to turn their empire into a religion - regardless of how their products actually perform relative to the competition. It's not about what runs better, nor about the pricing and most definitely not about market share. It's simply about the experience for the consumer, whether you understand that or not.
Microsoft is more focused on the technical side of things. They don't really care about design etc. Not saying they are bad or anything, they are just different. And Apple simply follows a different corporate strategy and focuses on a distinct bundle of competitive advantages to maintain their brand image. It's called positioning.
And guess what, people love it for reasons that only brain studies could reveal.
This is every CEO's wet dream right there: Have people buy your products because of your name and not because of your cost-performance ratio.Last edited by Wrath; 04-17-2012 at 10:32.

If i have to deal with apple in console discussions too i'll kill myself.

I do not get it.
I tried OSX once and its exactly opposite to windows, the close and minimise buttons are on the left and also in a different order so I constantly closed when I wanted to minimise it did my nut in it felt like i was fighting the OS rather than working with it.
If the current imacs are anything to go by an Apple console will be extortionate but look nice.

Exactly keefy.
You know i'm not a "apple hater", i give credit where credit is due.
For example the Ipad3 is the best pad out there period.
No other company has a pad with a comparable display.
However i don't want to "deal with them" (or their partially irrational fans) in the console market.
