How can I correct my sleep cycle?

Okay, I'm in a new apartment and I'm having trouble sleeping at night. I think my sleep cycle is messed up.

Back at home, someone would wake me up EVERY single night to go to the bathroom. It happened around 2-3 a.m. Now I'm not at home and no one is going to the bathroom at that time, yet I wake up every night at that time and have a lot of trouble going back to sleep. I end up taking a nap or sleeping 2-3 hours in the day time, which is not good, especially with classes going to start soon.

I have googled and searched on the internet to find nothing to help me.

Does anyone here have any ideas or do I need to go to a doctor about this?

The only advice I can offer is for you to try and keep yourself busy during the day. Start by waking up an hour or two earlier than you normally do.

Stay awake for 36hrs. Go to bed at your desired bed time and you should be so tired that you sleep through the night. This should help reset your switch.

I've done this a few times to adjust my sleep schedule. It works well. It just sucks trying to stay awake for that long. If you stay busy and keep your mind active, it's doable.

    Okay, question.

If I stay awake 36 hours, and then go to bed at 10 p.m., won't I oversleep trying to catch up? I try to get up at 6-6:30 a.m.

I'll give it a shot, but I'm most likely to end up falling asleep before the 36 hours is up.

Set your alarm. You may feel tired throughout the day. I have done this a few times and I generally feel pretty good the next day after staying up for 36hrs.

Sleeping cycles don't make any sense.

Just sleep when you go to bed.

I've gone 60 hours without sleep before, and then only sleep for 8 and feel fine.

Don't take naps in the day and try one night going to bed when you feel tired like you could pass out, so 3, 4 AM, even if it means you have to wake up in the next hour or so..you'll feel super tired, but you'll be able to go back to sleep the following day by your normal time and not wake up in the middle of the night.

Basically what Lethal said, setting your alarm. Really though, taking naps during the day really messes with things. Your body gets used to sleeping for only a few hours here and there and then gets ready for a midday nap. Long naps definitely will keep you from a normal schedule.

Be consistent. Go to sleep every night at a set time, and wake up around the same time as well. At first you might not notice any benefits, but from my experience, it helps after a few nights. My sleep schedule is messed up right now as well, but about a month ago I went to bed around the same time every single night and every day felt even better than the last.

So yeah, be consistent with your sleeping times, and as advised, don't take naps, as that messes up your cycle even more.

i've faced this many times tbh. got annoying. woke up every morning at 600. the thing that gets me back into a normal schedule where 615 isn't sleeping in is one, gradually stay up later each night. do this all the time when i'm home. eventually i go to sleep so late (around 12) that i sleep til at lest 8. then after not waking up at 600 for about a week i'm able to just do w/e.

it's basically all about breaking the pattern you've developed. best time to try this is on a friday and saturday night. your body is able to function on just 4 hours of sleep a night so going to sleep closer to the time you normally wake up should fix the little timing issue.

Lethal's idea works. I did it for 30 hours, slept and set my alarm at the time I want to wake up(Which is 6:00AM). I made sure the alarm was very loud because being startled at a specific time can train your mind to wake up. I did the alarm thing numerous time until it was etched in me.

My sleep cycle is going back to normal. I'm just getting up TOO early, but that can be adjusted with a little work.

    Thank you guys so much!

Trust me on this, sleep will catch up with you regardless of how much you try to escape it.

I've been through insomnia for years.

If you stay awake that long and only goto sleep for 8 hours...that doesn't mean that you will be at your full strength, the body will compensate somehow...whether you sleep or not.
