UPDATE:Some bad news for SEGA fans everywhere - SPOnG has heard word that Bayonetta 2 has been cancelled, following the publisher's ongoing restructure.
A source familiar with the situation has told SPOnG that progress on the apparent Platinum Games sequel was halted. The game was to include a new character, in the form of a member of the US military.
While it was not possible to ascertain from our source if Bayonetta 2 had begun development internally, the detail of a potential new character would suggest that plans were at least in a pre-production design stage.
SEGA announced a dramatic restructuring of its Western consumer business last month, following a dismal performance in the last fiscal year. Redundancies hit both the European and American offices, and a number of titles were said to be cancelled internally.
It was feared that Platinum Games' projects - which have been critically well-received but have had little success commercially - would be at risk, with a rumoured sequel to Bayonetta at the top of such a list. The original game was released on Xbox 360 and PS3 in January 2010, to critical acclaim.
SPOnG has asked SEGA about the situation, to the response, "No comment."

They need to stop milking there back catalog aka Sonic and coming with boring Sonic concepts etc and start creating games people want I didn't like the 1st game and it didn't help the fact the 1st game looked crapper on PS3 than 360 and thus had to release a patch. SEGA's made some bad decisions over the years like for me creating Valkyria Chronicles on PS3 then releasing 2 & 3 on PSP only that was a stupid idea in my opinion they've also have milked there classic back catalog for too long now.

I liked the first one, be a shame if this doesn't get made.
"When I was 12, I milked my eel into a pot of turtle stew. I flogged the one-eyed snake, I skinned my sausage. I made the bald man cry into the turtle stew, which I believe my sister ate. At least I hope she did."

I wanted to like the first title, but i just couldn't, the characters and dialog were quite bad, even by the Japanese action game standards.

Once more into the fray.
Into the last good fight I'll ever know.

there's only 3 kings of the hack n' slash. Kratos, Dante, Ryu Hayabusa. Nothing else comes close. Always thought Bayonetta was trying to hard to be like DMC.

Bayonetta 2 cancelled rumour: 'Keep an eye on magazines,' says creator
Hideki Kamiya, creator of Devil May Cry and its much-loved spiritual successor Bayonetta, has responded to rumours that Sega has canned Bayonetta 2 by teasing the possibility of an imminent announcement.
Spong claimed Sega has halted development on the sequel as part of the publisher's ongoing restructuring process.
But Kamiya took to Twitter via (Spong) to tell followers to keep an eye on "next week's game magazines", suggesting some new information will be revealed very soon.
As much as we'd like to see an announcement we're keeping our excitement in check. We've been burned before by Kamiya. Last year he teased Bayonetta 2 reveals multiple times and we're still waiting.
Fellow Platinum Games producer Atsushi Inaba reacted to the story more intriguingly, posting some mock concept art and the following message (via OXM): "We've heard all the rumors on the net. What do you guys think? Too bad it got cancelled, huh?" Bayonetta lead designer Hideki Kamiya retweeted the image.
The image shows Bayonetta striking a risqué pose with a burly military type fella featuring prominently in the background. Platinum Games fans will recognise the man as Robert Burns from Vanquish, who has a new red eye courtesy of Microsoft Paint. We're pretty sure Inaba is trolling.
Spong said the game was set to feature a new character in the shape of a member of the US military, although it's unclear if it the title was actually in development or in a pre-production design stage.
Kamiya has since posted another Tweet saying "Game that hasn't been announced cannot be canceled,so I know Bayo 2 is safe in your mind-heart and around PG office". This is getting a bit out of hand.
Asked about today's Bayonetta 2 report, Sega simply said "no comment."
Once more into the fray.
