Miyamoto: Vita isn't currently a strong product

The PlayStation Vita, in its current state, is not a strong product, so says Nintendo talisman Shigeru Miyamoto.

Speaking in an interview with Edge, Miyamoto argued that the system hasn't struck the right balance between the strength of the hardware and its software line-up.

"It's obviously a very hi-spec machine, and you can do lots of things with it, but I don't really see the combination of software and hardware that really makes a very strong product," he said.

He went on to suggest that the Vita would benefit from some compelling software, just as the 3DS did following its own sluggish launch period.

"When we launched the 3DS hardware we didn't have Super Mario 3D Land, we didn't have Mario Kart 7, we didn't have Kid Icarus: Uprising," he explained.

"We were striving to have all of these ready for the launch, but we weren't able to deliver them at that time. We were kind of hoping that people would, nevertheless, buy into the product, find 3DS hardware promising, but looking back we have to say we realise the key software was missing when we launched the hardware."

Market research figures released last week showed that the Vita is currently selling fewer units in Europe than both the Wii and PSP.

People were saying that about 3DS in it's first months. Vita just needs time, price cut and all the announced IPs to comeout.

So wait a minute, is Miyamoto trying to bash the Vita, or just point out it's not a strong product atm? Because he just said the same thing about his own 3DS....

cus You could say that the Wii has been out for what... 5 years now and it's never been a strong product... so yea...

Speaking in an interview with Edge, Miyamoto argued that the system has a gorgeous screen, dual analogs and dual touch screen, some of the industries biggest IPs on the way and can pretty much outdo what the Wii U controller can.

Vita will be fine in time, Sony just milking the early adopter mugs first. As did Ninty (points to self)

Miyamoto is just pointing out that the PlayStation Vita isn't a strong product. The fact that he admits to the Nintendo 3DS having its own faults shows that this isn't Nintendo simply bashing the competition.

I agree the handheld isnt a strong piece of gaming equipment because the launch titles were not enough to get my to spend 250 plus the games. I like the trophies and so on and Uncharted would be a great game but i wouldnt spend all that money on a system and a game i will only play like once in a blue moon... Maybe over the course of few months or even years i will take a second look

He's correct, the Vita needs more software to justify it's price tag. The handheld device is strong but without the adequate support, it's just hardware with a few perks. Time will tell.

Did some people actually read the article or just don their fanboy armour and keyboard because of the headline?

Have you read the article PSU posted? It's worse.

The article I posted in the OP was fine.

Launch to 2010 sales really suggest otherwise about the Wii.

And yes, he criticized Nintendo's own machine because it was true. The same is true about the vita at the moment. For the record, I own both.

What product would have been or ever have been strong when it launched? Every time we have similar idiotic articles that state the obvious...Soooooo boring.

Nothing he said is untrue. Both handhelds of the current generation suffered at launch for the same reasons. What incentive is there to invest in such an expensive platform when the games simply are not there yet? Lets hope that both Sony and Nintendo have that in mind when the time comes to launch their next home-consoles.
