How close is too close?

I am no genetics expert but I would have thought inbreeding in one circumstance to produce 1 child would not have much affect.
My thinking is if inbreeding continues down the line over many generations that is where these "defects" show themselves.

I know someone who married his cousin, he's the sort you'd look at and suspect something like that happening.

few years ago at a local pub comedy night, the comedian singled him out because he was sat at the front. he kept going back to him having digs about his appearance and whatnot, then he asked him if he was a sister fucker or anything like that. the room went quiet (apart from some isolated sniggering) and the subject of the joke was sat there with a face like granite.

the comedian didn't know what was wrong, and it was only as he was leaving that the guy that booked him explained everything.

that's brilliant. This isn't really related to the inbred thing but in work we were asking "would you rather be a lesbian or a nun" (dont ask me why) and I asked this girl who is actually a lesbian. was a little embarrassing.

I dont think having sex with a direct family member would result in a hideously deformed child. But if you both carry a genetic weakness it would probably have a stronger chance of showing.

I remember reading that you only get congenital problems when it's with people who are closely related like a brother-sister or a parent-son/daughter. Just did some searching and found this
