Pressure-sensitive Xbox 360 controller on the way?

Looks like MS may be trying out more Biometrics stuff.
A brand new Xbox 360 controller detailed in a recently-approved Microsoft patent from 2009 claims that it will be able to recognize the person holding it at any given time. The controller itself isreported to feature sensors that will be able distinguish a user’s identity simply from their hand-pressure patterns and fingerprints. What benefit would this serve players you may ask? The controller, essentially, would be able to automatically switch user profiles depending on who is holding it, at least ideally. Whether this idea flourishes into anything significant remains to be seen. Perhaps we’ll learn more at, oh I don’t know, E3 maybe?

That's cool but totally not worth the purchase of a new controller, especially with the new Xbox around the corner (where it would no doubt be commonplace in the controller).

I'm sure if this ever comes to be, it will be next gen or even later.

ea i dont think this will be for the 360...this is definitely next gen worthy....something i hope sony will replicate also (keep the 360/dualshock design and just implement this feature).

Microsoft patents pressure-sensitive controller that identifies who's holding it

Iris scans are old hat. The future of biometric identification is in registering and identifying a person's unique hand pressure profile – at least, that's what someone at Microsoft believes. The megalithic multimedia mogul has been granted a patent for "personalization using a hand-pressure signature," specifically in conjunction with game console controllers.

A device outfitted with this technology would include internal memory and a processing unit. Once gripped by a user, the device would register the pressure exerted by the user's mits and compare that to a stored database of recognized pressure profiles. Once a match is found, the device (in this case a 360) knows who is holding the controller and can then display advertisements information appropriately. Despite this patent being specific to controllers, we could see the usefulness of this technology in cell phones, tv remotes, or essentially any hand-held electronic device, should it ever come to fruition.

Like we need more advertising in games.

ever notice that whenever a new patent comes out for MS, the person reporting it ALWAYS brings up ads?

    LMAO

not that this won't be used for that, if it happens, but think outside the box.

it would know if a "kid" picked up the controller. Parental controls kick in. you could lock out certain content from kids, prevent them from charging things via points or your cc, etc... not just for ads here.

It could also load your profile for people without kinect, like kinect does. wife grabs the controller and turns on the xbox, it knows and loads her profile.

There are tons of uses for pressure sensitive/biometric controllers, least of which to me would be advertising.

    Thank you Vengeful!

Yeah, this needs to be for the next gen console, no way I'm buying another controller for that useless feature.
