I know this topic might be a little bit rough, so let's try to keep this thread civil, okay?

Have you ever heard someone call another person "retarded" as a substitute for other insults? I know you have, because the r word is the new word for stupid and etc.

My question is: Do you buy or sell calling someone, anyone, retarded? In other words, do you think that using that word is discriminitory against real retarded people? Or is it just a name, an insult that's not that deep?

What's the difference between using the homosexual word to offend someone and the r word to offend someone? There is none.

I have an aunt who works with retarded children and she absolutely hates when people use that word. She's seen it, she's seen people not able to control using the bathroom, people who can't do for themselves, and people who just have an extremely low quality of life.

I share her opinion. It's just wrong.

I think the same people who go around calling people retards and retarded would pick on people like homeless people, sexually abused people, and just people who are down in the dumps. If they pick on retarded people, imagine what they would do to other mentally disabled people with OCD, ADHD, and etc.

It's sad. Calling someone stupid is one thing, but retarded is the lowest of the low.

I use the word "retarded" and "gay" quite often. I do not use the words as real insults though. I will say "that's just gay", or "that looks retarded".

I would never use those words as a direct insult to anyone. I have much worse words for that.


P.S. I have 2 autistic children and the word "retarded" does not bother me one single bit. If someone calls my kid "retarded" though, then we have a problem. I use the words directed to situations.

I use it sometimes, only with friends tho. Real "retarded" people shouldn't be called retarded, they are mentally handicapped and should be called so. I think it's more insulting to mentally handicapped people to call them retarded

If someone is acting like a retard i'll call them a retard or if something doesn't look right i'd say it looked retarded. I wouldn't call someone with disabilities a retard though.

I can't say i can imagine calling anyone a retard as a genuine insult though. It's too far on the tame side of insults that you couldn't take seriously if you heard it.

I use gay and retarded as insults all the time, they are just that insults.

I have gay friends and family members with mental illnesses, just because I use these words as insults does not mean I am aiming them at them or that I have ANYTHING against those people.

Only little boys use the word gay as an insult because when a litle boy being called gay it is hugely insulting but now when someone (usually little boys) says or texts "gay" when I am playing BF3 or whatever game I just laugh knowign what I did annoyed them.

As for that NBA commercial I have not seen it.

The word 'retarded' is an ultimum expressum. I may call someone stupid, or call some action or event dumb, but if it's overly terrible then I may call it retarded instead. Don't talk to me about being offensive though. I'm autistic, and when I was young I had had deficient motor and social skills which took several years to grow out of and develop past. My younger cousin is also autistic and he has issues speaking and sometimes grasping even basic concepts, but even he sometimes uses the word as an insulting term.

The meaning behind the word means a lot more than the word itself. Context changes absolutely everything. If people are offended by it, then oh well; they're not so graced to be omitted from living.

I always use 'gay' or 'retarded' when something fucked up happens, I never really use it as an insult towards someone. If I am really displeased I will go as far as to say "this is aids"

i've used the word retarded, and there's one particular local in my pub with autism who everyone, including myself, would protect/do anything for.

the point being while some may consider him a 'retard', i don't. i don't consider that word to be a term that describes medical conditions. i use it to describe fucking idiots that need a slap. therefore i don't see anything wrong in using it - but i can see how some people might take offense
